Hunter Biden Special Counsel Question

Last edited Fri Aug 11, 2023, 08:59 PM - Edit history (1)

Sorry if this has already been asked and answered.

Why are they creating a special counsel for crimes that Hunter Biden already admitted guilt and paid all back taxes and penalties?

(Not including the gun charges as I assume after the recent 5th circuit ruling that he would seek to have those charges dismissed)

exchange for the plea agreement. The prosecution said that was not the case after the judge raised questions, and the plea deal fell apart.

The tax charge will now likely go to trial, which increases the legal peril for Hunter.

Also, there may well be new charges added, including acting as an unregistered agent for a foreign government.

The people saying that this is some Garland masterstroke (he is playing 5 dimensional chess, man!) and that is is good thing for Hunter and Joe are potentially likely to be sadly mistaken, especially as this will kick the investigations and/or trial(s) dead into the middle of the primaries and maybe even into the post primary election proper.

The low info voters (who are a HUGE bloc) will look at the shitshow and many will perhaps stupidly conclude that there actually IS something to the Rethug's bullshit rantings about the Bidens being corrupt (think mouthbreather indies sputtering 'where there is smoke there's fire man!', which will perhaps be cheered on by the likes of Andrea Mitchell and her ilk across the MSM), barring Hunter being acquitted on most everything and all investigations subsequently being dropped.

Even that last part (acquittals on most all and investigations dropped, neither of which are at all guaranteed to occur before the election) might not be enough.

Millions of non-MAGAt American voters (MAGAts are a given to be dangerous fools, dupes, marks, and thugs) are not exactly known for their satisfactory grasp of things even marginally complex when it comes to the realms of the law and of politics (and by complex I mean anything above Jack and Jill went up the hill.....).

The non voting ones (another massive bloc) are even less inclined to possess any satisfactory level of discernment, but they can indeed still (and will) spread negative bullshit into the voting bloc as well.

If he wins, the wildness is only beginning.

I feel so cheated out of my post teen and onward life in terms of large parts of it.

In a 4 and half month period, 2 massive inflection points:

23 June 2016 (Leave won the Brexit referendum)

and

November 8, 2016 (Trump won the POTUS, and I turned 20 less than a month before)

forever changed the political futures of two of my three nations in truly gigantic, systemic ways.

And in the third, Trump winning also helped to turbo-charge the rise of the far RW here in Sweden, to the point where we now have a far RW party (the Sweden Democrats) in power via a power-sharing agreement in our Riksdag (parliament).

‘Special Counsel’ thing seems just for show, because as I understand it is the same prosecutor who was working the Hunter Biden case.

He’s gone from regular to special!

I have half a suspicion that this will lead to nothing new about Hunter…. But it opens up the ability to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Jared & Ivanka. It’s kind of a counterpoint to show they not targeting. Imagine if they opened an investigation into “Jarvanka” without having done the same to Hunter. The House sure as heck wasn’t going to investigate them. This opens the door.

They’ve investigated Hunter for five years. What’s there is it. They’re not going to find anything else. There was no $5m payoff to Joe. If they want to “investigate” go for it. Hunter is a private citizen who made some mistakes. President Biden is a loyal public servant. RepubQcans will claim all kinds of cxxp anyway. But now the door is opened. I’m hoping I’m right because $2b from the Saudis plus boxes of classified information sure look like something was going on.

to investigate Hunter Biden, Republicans in Congress finally got their wish on Friday. And they were furious.

Reactions from the GOP began pouring in within minutes of Attorney General Merrick Garland’s announcement on Friday of a special counsel to oversee the criminal investigation of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.

KEY POINTS

* Republicans in Congress railed against Attorney General Merrick Garland’s decision to appoint David Weiss as special counsel to oversee the criminal investigation of Hunter Biden.

* Special counsels are not required to keep Congress updated on the status of their work, leading to fears that the move would effectively halt congressional probes of the president’s son.

* House Speaker Kevin McCarthy warned that the special counsel should not be used to “whitewash” the Biden family,..

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/10/us/trump-jan-6-insurrection-conservatives.html

I haven't been paying attention to the Republicans' "Huntergate". Just accepted that, lacking Evil Hillary with an existential election coming up, they're doing their best with Hunter.

I understand they're mad at being outmaneuvered in this, if not really how yet. But good. They'll be eating a lot more of what we dish.

of Republicans who should be investigated, but IMO, that’s irrelevant to investigating Hunter Biden for tax crimes and whatever else they may be looking at.

Bottom line, despite him paying back the taxes, Hunter pleaded not guilty to the tax crimes, so he’ll either change his plea and take a deal or he’ll go to trial.

Which is as it should be
