(101,840 posts)And nobody's getting impeached.
If the Republicans try to impeach the second "black president" after impeaching the first they will lose control over all three branches of government for a generation.

(14,400 posts)they don't have the votes to do it in the Senate and they remember all too well the puke implosion that followed the Clinton debacle.
Add to that the fact that they no crime has been committed or even inferred by any of the skeevy bastards that occupy the republican side of the House.
Also, if Biden moves up he gets to appoint a VP I believe, the speaker is third in line for the presidency not second in line for the VP spot.

(10,000 posts)Senate Benghazi hearings will be the big dog-and-pony show in the Spring. Impeachment hearings will be the big dog and pony show in the Summer. Impeachment will be approved along party lines. There will be a Senate trial. He'll be acquitted along party lines.

(33,688 posts)the President nominates a candidate for the position and s/he is subject to confirmation by the Senate. Read the Constitution, why don't ya. This happened once before, on the resignation of Spiro T. Agnew - R: crook and bribe taker.

(1,990 posts)When Nixon's vice president Spiro Agnew was forced to resign because of corruption, he appointed Gerald Ford as Vice President, who was confirmed by the Senate. When Nixon resigned, Ford became President, never having been elected as President or Vice President.

(10,000 posts)I'd bet it's in 2x digits.
Biden becomes President and nominates a VP who is confirmed by the Senate.
By the way -- it's not possibly; they are going to impeach. It pleases the wingnut base, and it makes the House feel powerful. Note that there is not a chance in Hell that he'll be removed from office. They aren't even close to sniffing the 67 votes needed to remove him.

(25,415 posts)As is allowed by the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, congress has to confirm it. And the House needs to impeach and then the Senate must vote by a 2/3rds majority to remove the President from office. Not going to happen anytime soon. Clinton was still President because the Senate did not pass a 2/3rds majority to kick him out of office. It is about as likely as the electoral tie everyone freaked out over.

(14,040 posts)it could be done easily but it's never going to pass the Senate and it will do nothing but piss off the American people. So, please, let's waste more time trying to get President Obama fired so we can win in 2014.
What would they impeach him on, anyway? There hasn't even been an investigation and I find it highly doubtful that an investigation is going to lead to impeachable information. But I guess you can dream, right?

(44,492 posts)The line of succession only works for President only. The only way the Speaker of the House moves into the Executive Branch is if both the President and Vice President are unable to serve simultaneously.
If the President is unable to serve, the Vice President becomes President, and he or she picks his or her own Vice President.

(966 posts)Unless they want to put the final nail in the coffin of their party, they won't do it. Remember President Clinton in 1998? Republicans lost seats that year...Enough said!

(3,602 posts)about impeachment and removal from office.
Clinton was impeached as a result of the House deciding by majority vote that his case should be forwarded to the Senate for "trial." I say "trial" in that it's not a criminal trial, it's to see if 2/3 of Senators will vote to remove from office. In Clinton's case, the Senate was 15 or so votes short of removal from office.
So, history records that Clinton was impeached but NOT removed from office.

(151,180 posts)but there will be no impeachment. There are enough sensible Republican House members who will vote against that, and probably enough to keep it from going to that stage at all.
Of course, the Democrats have a majority in the Senate, so there is no possibility of conviction.
Talk of impeachment is just that: talk.
