RI-01: Voting by mail for the primaries? Here's what you need to know

Planning to vote by mail in the upcoming September primaries? All registered voters have until 4 p.m. Tuesday to request a ballot from the Rhode Island Secretary of State’s office if they are unable to vote in-person at the polls next month.

Faith Chybowski, spokesperson for the Secretary of State’s office, said the office received 4,863 vote by mail applications as of Friday, Aug. 11 — with 97% of requests (4,741) made for the primary for Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District. Primaries are also being held for State Senate District 1 and the Foster Town Council.

Vote by mail applications can be filled in-person or electronically.

Voters applying online will need to provide their Rhode Island driver’s license or state ID number, name as it appears on the state’s voter rolls, and date of birth.

Those who do not have a license or ID must download a paper mail ballot application from the Secretary of State’s website. Applications must be submitted to your local Board of Canvassers. Hours and locations can be found here.
