My letter to Senators Gillibrand and Schumer about SS and Medicare
It was called to my attention that Senator Schumer was C-SPan yesterday. It was said that he seemed willing to concede to the Republicans on budget cuts.
While I understand some compromise maybe called for in solving the issue of the "fiscal cliff" and some "cuts" maybe necessary to some programs, I hope the "concessions" he is willing to make will not include any cuts to Social Security and/or Medicare.
The American People re-elected President Obama in an electoral landslide and by the popular vote. They also gave Democrats an even larger presence in the Senate, and added Democrats to the House as well.
I believe one of the reasons they did this is because the Democratic Party promised to defend Medicare/SS against cuts. To renege on that promise would be ethically wrong and politically costly.
SS and Medicare are pre-paid for benefits, not handouts. SS was never intended to be part of the general budget and should never be used to solve the problems of the general budget.
Cut from other programs if you need to such as subsidies to Big Oil, Big Pharma and most of all Defense, but don't touch SS or Medicare other than to raise the cap. Anything else is unacceptable.
Just conceding to Republicans demands for cuts on Medicare and Social Security is not the way to bipartisanship, but only the way to snatch defeat out of the hands of victory.
