Trump was arrogant enough to believe that he deserved to be President, and that attaining the office was just another box to tic on his 'Crazy Things Billionaires Do For No Good Reason' card.

He also almost certainly thought it was a good way to juice up his tawdry, gilded brand, tainted and twisted by multiple bankruptcies.

Instead, the whole shebang just served to illuminate what a sleazy criminal empire he was running, and the criminal actions he took to hold on to his Presidential 'safe space'.

I know the toothless inbreds out in Squalor Holler will continue to fall on their knobby knees and render glad hosannas in his name to the tops of the coal-slag heaps. But for people with more than two brain cells to rub together, Trump will fade into an unpleasant footnote in American history. And whatever his final resting place will turn out to be, it will likely be a popular stop for people with full bladders for generations to come.

and left the presidency alone, his crimes probably wouldn't have caught up with him.

by using the platform of the presidency, he committed crimes brazenly and openly for all to see.
