Scientists Recreate Pink Floyd Song by Reading Brain Signals of Listeners

The audio sounds like it’s being played underwater. Still, it’s a first step toward creating more expressive devices to assist people who can’t speak.

The research, published on Tuesday, produced a recognizable, if muffled version of Pink Floyd’s 1979 song, “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 1).”

For some reason it only works with Pink Floyd.

"spying" on the signals from the ear being processed in the brain to be able to hear what that brain is hearing.

pretty amazing stuff.

"The team chose the Pink Floyd song partly because older patients liked it. “If they said, ‘I can’t listen to this garbage,’” then the data would have been terrible, Dr. Schalk said. Plus, the song features 41 seconds of lyrics and two-and-a-half minutes of moody instrumentals, a combination that was useful for teasing out how the brain processes words versus melody."

Back in 1979 "older people" would have yelled "turn that shit off, it hurts my ears".

so I wasn't impressed with the reconstituted song - until I trundled off to YouTube and discovered the original was almost as incomprehensible as the reconstituton.

with one of the best guitar solos ever (two solos, really): https://www.guitarworld.com/news/david-gilmour-pink-floyd-comfortably-numb-first-take & https://www.guitarplayer.com/news/the-greatest-guitar-solos-of-all-time .

It isn't Pink Floyd's best album. Those are Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here. But it's still a fine album and sold over 30 million copies.

The song the scientists tested was the first single off the album and sold 4 million copies. And it isn't incomprehensible in the context of the album. It's a concept album, and a double album.

Try listening to this with your eyes closed, and then again with your eyes wide open.

It’s a lot easier to actually hear the lyrics when you can read along.
