Michael Hill, the owner of the property damaged by police, said law enforcement officials certainly didnt ask for permission before destroying sections of the house. Hill said FBI officials did contact him Thursday evening, but only to ask for floor plans to the residence.
Its obviously shocking, said Hill, who had been renting the property to a tenant. I dont know a lot about the circumstances. I can imagine they felt like they needed to act quickly. It seems a little extreme to me, but I dont know whether they could have waited longer.
In a follow-up statement Thursday, Harris County sheriffs spokesperson Jason Spencer said the agencys top priority in these situations is to preserve human life, even if that means damaging some property.

Hill added that he started the insurance claim process Friday morning, though he didnt know who will ultimately bear responsibility for the damage.
Coons, the Sam Houston State University clinical assistant professor, said Harris County likely wouldnt pay for the property damage due to the doctrine of sovereign immunity, which protects the government from lawsuits.

(10,863 posts)erroneous, they intentionally tear everything up and make a huge mess on purpose. At least that is what I have heard?
As far as tearing up this house, that was ridiculous. So, they want to try out their new machine "The Rook" so they tear the house to shreds with no responsibility? It makes the cops look like a bunch of assholes.
I am not anti-cop, but I am anti-dumbass cop.

WAY extreme method of getting him out. I have to think it was because he shot cops, and they had a toy they wanted to play with.

(10,969 posts)Yes, this is a serious discussion about government responsibility for property damage.
But the picture ended me for some reason.
Could've chosen from like 50 photos, and they went with "Wheeeee!" in the foreground.
Holy shit, finally stopped laughing.

(4,002 posts)There had to be an easier way? Pump tear gas in and wait for him to come out or something. This is crazy. I wonder if the homeowners insurance would pay as a lot of polices have exclusions for criminal activity.

(106,211 posts)Not the police's problem, apparently. If "sovereign immunity" protects the police, why didn't they just steal the machine in the first place, and save even more money?
