(22,597 posts)American Evangelicals are getting mad at Jesus for being too woke
"[The book] was the result of having multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching "turn the other cheek" [and] to have someone come up after to say, "Where did you get those liberal talking points?" And what was alarming to me is that in most of these scenarios, when the pastor would say, "I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ," the response would not be, "I apologize." The response would be, "Yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak." And when we get to the point where the teachings of Jesus himself are seen as subversive to us, then we're in a crisis."

(4,741 posts)The guy is all over the place and downright bipolar when it comes to morality.
Love your neighbor--but if they don't agree with me, then cut them off, even if they're your family.
Turn the other cheek--but torture them forever if they don't agree with me.
Blessed shall be the peacemakers--but if they do something I don't like, I'll beat the crap out of them (moneychangers, for instance).
The only "central' message I see coming from the religion is that it's okay to be a mindless hypocrite. At that, a substantial number of his followers succeed.

(4,728 posts)the Old Testament, full of swords and smitin and rape and incest and genocide. With a side of human sacrifice. Yee-ha.
Reminds me of Lovecraft. Or "Lovecraft Country".
Sacrifice that in a small town.

While its tragic that so many people perished in that cult, it vividly illustrates what can happen when an egomaniac feels threatened. Some might secretly wish that Mango Mussolini would eat a bullet like Jim Jones did and take a lot of adult MAGAts with him but their children, like those in Jonestown, deserve a much better fate.

They've only been following that script since the religion's inception.

(26,178 posts)Love = money and Trump promises to play it forward. Every dollar you give, you'll get three in return. Which you will also give to Trump. The more you give, the more he loves you. It's like Jesus, but with the money exchangers as the good guys.

I just don't know what the hell is going on with shit like this. I just does not compute and so am I missing something? I don't think so. Where does that leave me and like minded people. Trying to figure it in a humanistic way. I got nothin, which puts it in the least malicious way I can think of.
So happy to have DU

(20,870 posts)Shocked that their religious leaders are in 4th, unless they count Oral Roberts or Jim Bakker.
Shocked that they don't trust the Messiahs of media they spend hours a day tuned into.
Shocked to my core that anyone would even include #1 on the poll, let alone 71%.
Have we gone mad? Have we taken leave of our senses?
Should we begin reopening mental health facilities closed in the '80s (or what they'd call Brainwashing Centers)?
I might reconsider getting a concealed carry permit for my safety.

(25,308 posts)So-called religious leaders propelled this POS movement, for their own monetary advantage.
Coming in fourth in this Shit Parade is a major loss in prestige (a.k.a. Money)
Might the see the light yet?
Dont forget, they got not a nickel from the cult leader, just from the blind rage they created for him and through him. ( Per ipsum, et cum ipso et in ipso
so to speak)
They'll find those nickels another way when the Church of Trump dries up.
Meanwhile: SIEZE THE DAY. Cult in disarray.

Pick the one you like and swear by it.
Swear at the others.
.................... That's why candidates sometimes refer to mystery polls that no one can locate to check.

(7,920 posts)You let someone else do the thinking for you.
Suspend all critical thought, ask the Leader to tell you want to think, let the leader tell you what to do.
Some people find comfort in not having to think.
HINT: Just hold back if he tells you the Mothership is coming, and you should drink the Flavor Aid.
Me?
I trust everyone. But let me check your thought processes carefully before I agree with you or decide to follow you.
Often it becomes . . . yeah fine, do whatever, I will do my own thing thanks.
(Consequently, I'm a bit of a lone wolf. And the feeling of mind freedom is euphoric!)
