Christmas wasn't complete without the family getting together and using every racial slur in the book to describe the non-white people who were ruining this country in their opinion.
I still remember 14 yr old me sitting on the front steps, listening to my Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre cassette tape, and my grandfather yelling at me to stop listening to porch monkey music.

(15,553 posts)Of course there are racist, fascist Dipshits everywhere, but...AND IT'S A BIG BUT...they are not elected to super majorities in blue states.
There are exceptions, where northern state have been gerrymandered to shit like WI and OH following the 2010 frickin disaster, but it is the South where these racist asshats are in power as representatives of the majority
So, yes, there are racists in the Northern states, but the blue states tend to keep their racist fucksticks locked up in the attic.
My drunk uncle in Ohio was racist as Fuck, but he didn't have the power to expel black elected leaders like they just did in TN, or suspend black elected prosecutors like they just did in Florida, and will do in GA now that they've given themselves the power to do so.
Also, although I shouldn't have to point it out, the North didn't fight a war to maintain slavery
Oh, and BTW, point me to a Northern State that had "whites only" lunch counters as late as 1960?
Seems there is a big difference between run of the mill racists, and racists elected by a majority of their peers, with all the power that entails.

(15,659 posts)80's and early 90's. Saw my first KKK march after only a few months there. I swear my eyes almost bugged out of my head when I witnessed that. Oh, and a few of us took our very religious secretary who was born and raised in S. Carolina to lunch for secretary's day and on the way in there in the car she told a joke to the five of us in the car where she used the "n" word. The others all chuckled and I remember say, "I'm appalled you would say that". Sure put a damper on the celebration. Then there was the first week at my new job where I sat in the lunch room with a black woman about the same age as me and who was new also and no one would speak to me for awhile. I asked a guy from the North who had lived there a bit longer than I had why no one was very friendly to me and he said, "You're in the South now and they can't believe you would sit at the lunch table with her." I could tell you more stories than just these but I'm sure you have enough of your own. I lived there almost ten years.

(4,741 posts)They simply didn't have signs up about it. They were sneaky about it.
1961. Ann Arbor, MI. My mum invited black co-workers to join her at her favorite restaurant, her treat, as a reward for all of the surgery workers who had gone above and beyond that year. The black people declined. They knew the restaurant never served them.
Mum insisted, though, she knew the owner, he wasn't a bad person. They reluctantly went along.
Go to the restaurant. Serving staff wouldn't even approach the table, not even to give them glasses of water. Waited over an hour to be served, while white people who came in after them got served. It was a hard lesson for my mum to learn as a newbie to American racism, Northern style.
That's effectively "Whites Only," whether or not a sign was up. In the South, that sign being up was at least honest about the matter.
Malcolm X himself said that racist was racist, and at least Southerners were honest that it's what they were, unlike the North, which was sneakier and more insidious about it. James Baldwin repeatedly wrote about that same issue in numerous novels, plays and essays. Have you not read them?
And consider this: The vast majority of major urban race riots during the 60s happened not in the South but in places like Detroit, Newark, Watts, Harlem, Rochester, Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, Dayton and etc.
Did it ever occur to you why that was?

(15,553 posts)when racism is sanctioned by the power of the state.
There is a difference between a bunch of racist ass white women marching into a library and saying; "here's a list of books I want banned", and a bunch of racist ass white women marching into a library and saying; "here's a list of books the governor and state legislature say I can have removed", "oh and I brought the sheriff with me"

(12,884 posts)She grew up there in the 40s. One of her stories was about being on the bus and a black guy who went to school with her was standing. She had an empty seat next to her & called over to him to have a seat. he just said "thanks I'm ok" even when she insisted. At school he told her "I appreciate you offering that seat but you didnt understand; I'm not allowed to take it". She was ahead of her time then & when she went into the military.

(15,731 posts)hometown at that time. There was a reason for that. No one can ever tell me that racism wasn't alive in well in eastern Mass in that era, particularly in and around Boston. It was plainly visible. I was raised to be afraid of blacks.
Sure, it wasn't formalized in local/State government policy, but it sure as hell existed in plain sight. I like to think most of the Trumpers in MA today belonged or would have belonged to that cadre back in the 50s-60s.

(15,659 posts)it didn't take me very long to figure it out. I think I was there about three months when I realized it. They actually hate Northerners. What I was told when I first moved there (by another transplant), "If you just moved here, they consider you a Damn Yankee. After about ten years living here, you'll just be considered a Yankee". In other words, you will never be accepted.

(66,859 posts)They drawl "Wanna fight?" the way other people say "How are you doing?"
When I joined the Army, every white Southern redneck who found out I lived in the North wanted to fight me. And when they found out I was Southern born-and-raised, but lived in the North, they called me a 'scalawag' and wanted to fight even more. I guess some people are just brought up to believe that if they can get one more punch in, one more Northern boy down, then somehow that will erase their Civil War defeat and their much-deserved humiliation.

(23,444 posts)for insurrection - and the number facing charges for racketeering and election fraud - that Cabinet members, military command and others will be unlikely to ignore an attempt to engage in civil war against the Unites states government no matter what illegal order a future president might issue. President Biden has done an excellent job confirming the supremacy of the rule of law and constitutional principles, and MAGAts just don't have the balls to engage in a violent civil war with their little AR-15s.

(576 posts)I live in the north country in NYS. My uncle has always tended to listen to AM radio stations and something out of Canada and has long been down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. But a larger part of his personality used to be at least somewhat normal. He is 82, generous with his time and money. Good looking guy. Volunteers with a search and rescue group. Repairs trails on National Trails Day. Would give anyone his last dollar and frequently has. He still works and doesn't have much, but he puts money in the church donation plate, then gives extra if a family has experienced a fire, illness, or death. He can be very funny.
He has been hanging around our Constitutional Sheriff and now I can't be around him at all anymore. He espouses RW/Trump talking points. He has been turned down for jobs because he won't get the vax. His face turns red and purple, his voice raises, and his arms start flying around. I live way out in the country and was shocked when someone appeared on my porch at 10 p.m. a few days ago. It was a young woman at the wrong address with an Instacart delivery. (I didn't even know we could get that out here!). I made the mistake of telling Uncle Dave and he started yelling that the young woman just better watch herself going to the wrong house out in the country. I cut him off and reminded him that people used to be able to knock on the wrong door, ring the wrong doorbell, accidentally get in the wrong car, turn around in a driveway without getting shot. I said it's not the young woman's fault--it's the people being quick to use a gun. Then he started muttering stuff about "they and "them" and about civil war. Who does he think he's going to fight? It's not North v South this time. Or slave owners v abolitionists. Each state has communities of red/blue/purple. And exactly why are we going to civil war? Over which ideology? RWs can't even agree completely on their beliefs.
Anyway, I find it disgusting that our sheriff is actively working to get people radicalized and extreme, then holding rallies to remind them of their Second Amendment rights. Dangerous combo.
Another point: The Dept. of Health just published a study about people being lonely and isolated. That is my uncle. He is the perfect target for people trying to radicalize others.
