Former actor/COVID-denying MAGA lunatic Kevin Sorbo has been trending all morning on Twitter X after going on Fox News to whine about how he cant find anyone to hire him.
It was sad to me.You know, my manager and agent for so many years said that we cant get you jobs anymore, work with you because of you being a Christian, being a conservative, the Bitch Slap actor said.
And I almost had to laugh at that because its an industry that screams for tolerance, and yet its a one-way street. It screams for freedom of speech. But Hollywoods a one-way street as well. And thats just too bad, you know.
Then, in typical Christian love-the-sinner-but-also-hate-the-sinner fashion, the Wog Boy 2: Kings of Mykonos star added, But I love the industry. I love the movies and TV.
Were gonna go out on a limb and say the reason the Bernie the Dolphin actor hasnt been able to find a job has a lot to do with the fact that he hasnt had a hit since Hercules: The Legendary Journeys was canceled in 1999.
Then, of course, theres incessant tweeting about stuff like COVID, mask mandates, vaccines, ANTIFA, leftist agitators, LGBTQ+ people, and other patently false right-wing conspiracy theories.

Earlier this month, when it was announced that Sarah Huckabee Sanders would be stepping down as White House press secretary, the 60-year-old shared a hot take on feminism. Not one feminist has defended Sarah Sanders, he tweeted. It seems womens rights only matter if those women are liberal. Its unclear which of Sanders rights Sorbo thinks need defending, or for that matter, what he thinks feminism is.
One of Sorbos most infuriating tweets to date reads, If women are upset at Trumps naughty words, who in the hell bought 80 million copies of 50 Shades of Gray? Apparently, Hercules did not get the memo on consent.
----------------
He was even cast in the disturbing far-right, anti-abortion film Roe v. Wade, alongside Milo Yiannopoulos and Tomi Lahren, before backing out at the last minute. In 2016, he voiced his support for then-candidate Trump because he believed Jesus would vote for Trump, once again demonstrating foolproof logic.
When Sorbo isnt too busy taking down socialists, quoting Candace Owens, or retweeting other right-wing C-list celebrities (looking at you, Stacey Dash), he watches a livestream of a bald eagle sitting in a tree. That is actually something he does and has been doing off and on for five months. This guy really loves America. Except for the Democrats, feminists, professional basketball players, and female readers of erotica, of course.

Problem is that he isn't a very skilled actor. There are plenty of conservative actors who are talented enough to make it big in Hollywood. Gary Sinise and Clint Eastwood are just a couple of them, Vince Vaughn has done exceedingly well. Sorbo just has never been a very good actor.
Also, the reality is that yes, the film industry, because of its association with "artistic expression" will tend to be liberal. Because films tend to tackle subjects that are not typically straight propaganda like right wing or "Christian" films like what Sorbo has been focusing on. To do mainstream Hollywood films, you need to have a more liberal worldview, or at least, be more open to stretching your character. People who wear their politics on their sleeve, especially those who are particularly right wing and spout stupid shit like Sorbo, Schneider, Victoria Jackson, etc... who also are not exceedingly talented and I hate to say it, aren't exactly in their prime, will see their opportunities diminish.
Part of right wing culture, especially those who also have a fundamentalist Christian bent, fully embrace the idea of "being hated by the world" which is a very prominent theme in fundamentalist Christianity. Being aggrieved and "put upon" is just another sign that you are a true and good Christian.

(11,767 posts)The big difference between those stars and Kevin Sorbo, is talent. Even Voight, who is batshit crazy, has the talent to continue landing big roles.

(10,943 posts)... my hopes were raised when I read, "Earlier this month, when it was announced that Sarah Huckabee Sanders would be stepping down," but dashed when it continued, "as White House press secretary..." She's now a Governor. Kevin would be hired if his work was good, made money, and if he was pleasant to work with.

(113,947 posts)If you hold these views, that isn't why you aren't hired. It is more likely 1). your lack of talent; 2). your inability to keep your mouth shut and not cause disruption on set.

(49,286 posts)According to cherished church tradition and popular belief, before the Emperor Constantine made Christianity legal in the fourth century, early Christians were systematically persecuted by a brutal Roman Empire intent on their destruction. As the story goes, vast numbers of believers were thrown to the lions, tortured, or burned alive because they refused to renounce Christ. These saints, Christianity's inspirational heroes, are still venerated today.
Moss, however, exposes that the "Age of Martyrs" is a fiction--there was no sustained 300-year-long effort by the Romans to persecute Christians. Instead, these stories were pious exaggerations; highly stylized rewritings of Jewish, Greek, and Roman noble death traditions; and even forgeries designed to marginalize heretics, inspire the faithful, and fund churches.

(15,393 posts)The difference is, they understand their talent range and don't delude themselves into believing they're always going to be A-list Celebrities who can demand special treatment or considerations on set - or in public.
When one can't get work in Hollywood, its usually because they either aren't marketable or difficult to work with on set.
Unless they got on the wrong side of one of the real money people in Hollywood, and those cases are significantly different (like Brenden Frasier's situation).
Kevin Sorbo's problem is that he thinks he's the Christian Warrior version of Dwayne Johnson, without Johnson's likability factor or understanding of his acting range. Nor has Sorbo been willing to take on any role offered since "he found God". Since he didn't try to capitalize off his fairly successful TV show and wasn't willing to spread out and grow his roles, he got stuck
And once he got too old to play a hunk hero type, his options have become pretty limited, and he's suffering the fate of aging action and model types in Hollywood - the older one gets, you start sliding down into the B-list or C list roles unless the camera really likes you, and you have actual charisma and talent.

(38,211 posts)Hollywood will (and has) overlooked just about anything if someone makes enough cash roll in.
You don't, and there's plenty of other actors with your level of quality acting (putting it overly politely), so now you have to work in a conservative's paradise: the people in charge are completely free in their hiring decisions. They're under no obligation to consider you, and likely they can get someone as good or better.
Not fair, you say? What do you want, a quota?
