(12,062 posts)Putin won't pull out of Ukraine or cut a deal to end the fighting. If he gets taken out, the one certain thing is that whoever replaces him will find he can't end the fighting. Admitting Ukraine was a mistake is a sign of weakness. The one thing a coupmaker can't afford to do in Russia is give any indication of weakness, not even for a ceasefire. It'd demoralize the country and lead to even greater dissatisfaction among the wingnuts most likely to seize power next.
It's perverse, but Putin in office is Ukraine's best chance to have peace by 2025.
