The shirt and tie complete the flimsy poorly constructed look. 26. Airlines are having a serious problem

by using an average weight of a person in 1935? to calculate take off weight for planes. Several Airlines have begun weighing every passenger to get a more realistic average weight to use in calculating the take off weights. They are finding that the weights in the old calculation based on the distant past are FAR different from our modern obese/semi-obese weights of passengers......

In Denver, the take off weight is far more critical to calculate due to the Air Density Altitude at 5K feet and the Air Density at higher temperatures........In the summer, we have both factors, and planes are limited because of it......For international flights from Denver in the summer, (that are carrying maximum fuel), we have a three mile runway so the planes can get enough speed on the ground to lift off.)........

I vacationed in Puerto Rico. The take off weight issue nearly ended me. The main runway at the airport heads toward the water. Obviously they have a certain length before it's lift off or disaster. When you land in these tourist spots everything seems cool because it's just the people and their clothes, mostly, inside their luggage. But a pilot friend explained to me that many times when the plane is going to leave those couple hundred people have now loaded up on all the merch, driftwood mementos, neat looking rocks etc. and this adds to the take off weight and in tropical settings lift for takeoff is affected by the heat and humidity. Along with, as you pointed out, an outdated sense of the weight of an average passenger. But I didn't know at the time that hot humid places also affect aircraft takeoff.

So long story short is I'm sitting on the wing as we are rolling down the runway and the pilot is giving it hell but we're not lifting. We are coming closer and closer to the end of the runway and the water beyond. I look at one of the flight attendants and she is pale as a ghost and eyes big and wide. Just as I'm getting ready to hear St. Peter laugh at me and point me away from the Pearly Gates, we got lift at the very, very end of the runway. As we went out over the water it took a long time for us to gain altitude. But at least I could see we were climbing.

It could have been a combination of factors like the ground crew didn't account enough for cargo weight, inaccurate estimate of passenger weight, atmospheric conditions affecting air density/lift/engine performance, a runway length that is pushed to the limit of acceptable etc. I don't know but my pilot friend told me that over the years there were airports that pilots hated to fly into and out of because of runway issues and other factors affecting takeoff etc. Here is an article about the atmospheric issues.
