NM: State Supreme Court extends deadline on redistricting case

Aug. 25—The state Supreme Court gave a state district judge an additional five days to settle a Republican-led lawsuit challenging a congressional district map approved by a heavily Democratic New Mexico Legislature in 2021.

Initially the high court gave the District Court until Oct. 1 to resolve the redistricting case. But the Supreme Court amended the order Friday, saying the court "shall take all actions necessary to resolve this matter no later than October 6, 2023, including entry of a final, appealable order."

The Republican Party of New Mexico and six individuals filed the lawsuit in January 2022 in the 5th Judicial District Court, alleging congressional district changes were the result of illegal gerrymandering. The case later was assigned to 9th Judicial District Judge Fred T. Van Soelen after all the judges in the 5th District either recused themselves or were unavailable to hear the case.

The GOP contends the maps were redrawn to dilute the power of Republican voters in Southern New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District by shifting some communities with large numbers of Republicans into the two northern districts, where Democrats hold strong advantages, and then moving Democratic communities into the 2nd District.

We’re purple-having a right-wing nut often pictured with M Traitor Green when she was our Congresswoman. She lost (after claiming victory) to Xochitl Small. Then she won the next election. Then she lost again to Gabe Vasquez.
She’s running again. She voted against certifying President Biden.

It matters.
