Does he come from a poor family, as he claims, who came to the US seeking a better economic life for themselves? According to this comment on Reddit, Ramaswamy's family is from the Brahmin caste in India. I don't know who the person is that posted this comment, or if what he says is true, but it is worth thinking about. Maybe an investigative journalist should look into it.

(26,009 posts)I was looking for. I was already aware of the privileges of the Brahmin caste.
What I'd like to know is whether it is true that Ramaswamy's family is from the privileged Brahmins who are at the top of India's caste system, which would make his tale of family poverty dubious. Also, does he embrace the idea of some people being superior and entitled?
If the info about Ramaswamy is true, it should be verified and reported by a journalist who could ask him about his views on such social divisions.

(37,535 posts)That's the problem.
His dad went to a local engineering college in Kerala State, his mom to a medical school in Mysore. Currently there's tuition/fees for university in India, but I don't know about 40 years ago. Things change. His parents' families had some money, but 40 years ago it wasn't like a well-off family in India typically earned a huge paycheck once converted to $.
There's an issue with caste coming across with the people that inhabited the caste system. Different immigrants deal with it differently--some uphold the hierarchy, some simply ignore it. Of course, there's everything in between. One size doesn't fit all. I think last month I heard CA was putting (or trying to put) caste in its list of prohibited discriminatory practices. It was a huge issue for the advocate arguing against fighting caste carryover into the US, but how big a problem it really is isn't known to me. I have a fair number of S. Asian students in my classes (high school) but don't know enough about their backgrounds to interpret their interpersonal interactions.
To hold his caste against him if he doesn't uphold the system is about as bad as holding his caste against him were he low caste. I don't know how to check about his attitudes toward caste. Maybe look at the range of castes he hired, to the extent that his company hired S. Asian Hindus?

president.
