Nikki Haley says America's retirement age is 'way too low' and needs to be increased, while also calling on cognitive tests for politicians over 75 (Business Insider) She proposed increasing the full retirement age for "people like my kids in their twenties."
The idea is wildly unpopular, according to polling.
GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley said she thinks the US' retirement age is "way too low" and needs to be increased.
In an interview with Bloomberg Markets on Thursday a day after she attended the first GOP presidential debate in Milwaukee, Haley said the country should increase the retirement age in an attempt to address possible Social Security and Medicare insolvency.
"The way we deal with it," Haley said, "is we don't touch anyone's retirement or anyone who's been promised in, but we go to people like my kids in their twenties when they're coming into the system, and we say the rules have changed."

(38,632 posts)Percentage of their pay when they retire than will people who earn less than the maximum base. Benefits are capped, because the goal of the system is to provide a safety net rather than a full pension that would cover income needs.

(76,697 posts)I didn't understand how that benefitted the system then, & I still don't.
The argument that we don't cap contributions unless we drop the cap on benefits is lost on me.
Benefits could be means tested, incrementally, above whatever the "no-strings" maximum benefit is for that year.
People paying nothing on 90% of their compensation would never need more that the max benefit.
Yes, there would be whining from those that made 7 figures for the last 15 years. But, they'll give over it and never k8ss the extra ten or twenty thousand.
Just eliminate the silly cap. Fixes a lot of issues.

(11,780 posts)After earning a certain amount. Not sure what that is nowadays. Some were between $150k and $200k most likely. Many studies have shown that would have a huge impact, if those people paid SS on all their earnings.

(4,128 posts)Oh, let's do ANYTHING but raise the limit on SS contributions to $500,000 or even $1 million. Gosh, we can't possibly do that as all those rich folks would squeal and vote for Democrats.

(26,915 posts)A promise was made by Social Security that if I participated in paying into this fund kinda like a pay it forward thing..I would be eligible for benefits at an age agreed to by congress. I, like everyone else, even in their early careers, expect that promise to be fulfilled. There are plenty of ways to enhance the funds without breaking this contract with the American workforce that pay in every paycheck. This idea isnt one of them. Good luck selling it to the young people
lostnfound
(17,520 posts)If you were born in 1960 or later, its 67.
Raising it further will hurt young people in the near term as well as the long-term promotions and better jobs will be held longer by people who want to retire but cant.
The absurdity of extending it for young people the solvency of SS when they are old will heavily depend on how many babies theyve raised who have become workers.
Plus there is the post-COVID syndrome for many.

(8,876 posts)Housing costs much and too many 'retirees' are worn out but still working part time just to keep a roof over themselves. They are tired, in pain, worn out and barely managing.
Haley can take her pampered ass and buy some empathy. American workers are worn out, often well before 67. She is just working for the bosses who want to exploit us peasants until we drop. It's another end run around Social Security.

Fuck her. The US already has a higher retirement age than other western democracies...and fewer vacation and family leave days and no universal health care.
Again, fuck her and her repupblican, anti-worker spew.

(2,728 posts)My husband and I both retired mid-sixties. Is it so terrible that we have enjoyed some time to ourselves? Our health is still relatively good, we are not rich, but are comfortable. The idea that we are supposed to keep grinding away until we physically and mentally can not any longer, then we just die? Ive had some satisfying jobs in my life. None, however, worth dying for.

(38,213 posts)Also, bullshit that it ends there. The plan is the same as with abortion: get one restriction and the push for the next, until it is de facto or de jure ended. One of the motivators for stuffing right-wingers on the courts has been to finally overturn the decisions that ruled that Social Security was constitutional.
This isn't pushed by anybody concerned with the public good. This is pushed by people who see a huge pile of money they don't have their fingers in. Their fingers and their vacuums to suck the money their way.

(53,544 posts)It is based on reportable earnings. If they work longer they get more when they retire.
Especially if there is less retirement time the payout would be higher.

(589 posts)I feel that If I got an easier job where I wasn't moving and lifting all day that I would fall apart. I'd gain weight and my body would start weakening. I see many my age with easier jobs or no jobs just fall apart. I've seen way older people than I live and move and get by pretty well if they keep moving. I fear retirement at younger ages may be bad for some. Would be bad for me at least.
This doesn't mean the government needs to raise it.

(6,352 posts)For blue collar workers (if that's still an apt term), 67 is probably too old. But for white collar workers, it's probably ok.
I think having an intergenerational mix at work is good. It forces older workers to be open to new ideas but in the context of years of experience to know where the risks are. Younger workers learn how to better question the staus quo.
But at a certain point you don't want older workers to hand over those jobs and retire.

(4,741 posts)The retirement age is already too high. For decades now, tt's hurt our young people in the work force. People retiring so late makes jobs scarcer--which is what traitor scum want--us all desperate for jobs.
The solution to making Social Security and Medicare solvent in perpetuity is to eliminate the maximum salary cap on paying in.
If she had a brain, rather than delusions of grandeur, she'd know that.

Which is why she turned down the Medicaid funds provided by the ACA for the people in her state while she was Governor. What's up, "Nikki"? You trying bring your Indian roots to the US in the form of a caste system like the one they have?
