(26,455 posts)spending money on public programs that benefit the general population. They have equated it in the minds of their followers with "handouts" to minorities instead of admitting that public programs include things like having a solid infrastructure, police and fire departments, public libraries, etc. that benefit everyone.
To them, fiscal responsibility means supporting the status quo of the economic upper 10% of society. But as long as they tell their supporters that it is leftists, immigrants, and POC who are responsible for all economic problems in the country, their followers will not see how they are being used.

(38,334 posts)People liked Social Security and other programs, so obstinate "that's not the role of the government" ideological rhetoric wasn't cutting it. But people would take you seriously if you railed about deficits.
The Reagan/Bush came and made all prior deficits look like tiddly-winks (all the while blaming Democrats for it). The last wheezing gasp of Republican "fiscal responsibility" was GHW Bush signing the 1990 tax hike to try to stem the red ink. His party crucified him for it.
By the time of the Cheney/Bush administration, Dick Cheney was saying outright "Reagan taught us that deficits don't matter."
But that old trope is so ingrained in national media that it sticks no matter how long it's been left in the dust.
The last time Republicans made any serious attempts o present a balanced budget was back in the 1990s. That was forced on Bill Clinton. The Republicans have not made a serious effeort to be fiscally responsible since. But the reporters, editors and executives of the lamestream corporate media still take BS Republican claims about fiscal responsibility seriously.
Republican fiscal responsibility died when Buckaroo Bush was in the White House. Its dead and gone. A quarter-century is a long time.Maybe the credulous reporters and their editors still believe the BS because that its corpse is supposed to stop smelling after a couple of months.

LBJ zeroed out the deficit in 1968--with a massive boondoggle of a war going on. His foreign policy was shite, but his domestic policies were the best of any POTUS, ever.
