Judge Chutkan will set Trump's trial date.
The 2 sides could not be farther apart in the date.
Will this be how Trump is held accountable for his constant threats, his intimidation of judges and prosecutors and jurors, his attempt to taint the jury pool?
Isn't having a speedy Trump trial before the election better that putting him in jail? I think it is, I think that his lashing out strategy will be used against him. This is a big prediction on my part, it may affect my overall % because I think it is worth double points and I am betting against the majority opinion.
Time Matters. We need a Trump trial before the election.

(32,318 posts)convicting him of his crimes is a must to deter the next traitor who wants to bring down our democracy.

(7,781 posts)Only really likely takes all of 1 for him to rot since he is 77.
Out on appeal remains to be seen for the liar.

(11,142 posts)There must be consequences. REAL ones. Ones that will ruin his life just as what he and his administration did and did not do have ruined others. Locking him up in Club Fed is not a consequence, despite the belief that his ego could not handle it. How is that going to punish him? How many died due to inaction from him and his administration? There had better be some real punishment metted out, not just lip service as he goes to a cushy cell with three square a day and the ability to pretend that he is still important. Otherwise, we will have no choice but to examine exactly how some get what they got and others get what they got. The disparity will be too great to dismiss as 'incidental' anymore.

(43,163 posts)There is no punishment equal to the crimes he has committed.
There just isnt.
However, the universe has its ways and I think we may see something we never thought of. Our human attempt to bring justice to the world often pales when the universe shapes a punishment.
OldBaldy1701E
(11,142 posts)To not put my faith in 'the universe' anymore, especially when it comes to people like that orange gibbon and his cronies. We need to stop playing and start punishing. Otherwise, he will just be the first of a long line of shallow vultures who become powerful solely because of a green piece of paper and the fact that everyone worships it, and then try to destroy our nation just because they are not being pampered enough.

(43,163 posts)Assumes he is given a prison term. Even that would not be justice. Even a life sentence would not be adequate.
Now do you see my point?
OldBaldy1701E
(11,142 posts)But, it seems your belief is that since nothing will equal what he has done, we should just keep on dancing around him and his cronies while doing little more than 'condemning his actions'? Because I don't see any wisdom in that. What I do see is the eroding of faith in our judicial system because this has certainly shown that there are two tiers to our 'justice' and if one is part of the 'in' crowd, one gets the sweet treatment. You or I would have been put in a cell and we would still be there waiting for a trial, which would have happened by now. We are either equal under the law or we are not. So far... well...
NJCher
(43,163 posts)I've spent decades working in a nonprofit helping people who don't have the money to negotiate the legal system. That would hardly be the opinion of someone who has seen this side of our justice system.
OldBaldy1701E
(11,142 posts)And I would think that doing the great work that you do would continually show that we are in fact not an equal society when it comes to our legal system. Why is this man still able to travel and post insults? You and I both know that you or I would be sitting in a cell right this moment. He is not. That is what I mean about 'dancing around him'. They are not doing what they would do to someone like us. But, someone like him gets to lounge at home while they are being indicted. The system is not fair and just.
However, it looks like we are arguing two different things here. So, if I am truly missing what you are trying to say, then I am sorry. Losing cognitive ability sucks and there is nothing to be done about it. So, it is not a surprise that I may be missing your point.

(13,283 posts)That it is better to have a speedy trial for Trump, or that today is the day Judge Chutkan will set a speedy trial date for Trump before the elections?
Myself, I don't have the balls to make prediction. But as events proceed towards the likelihood of the trial actually happening before the elections, I am thinking about wagering a seven dollar bill in favor of that outcome. I am not rushing to make the bet, though. Perhaps a day after the trial is scheduled to begin, or November 4, 2024, whichever comes first.

(32,318 posts)Time has been one of Jack Smith's major goals since he took over for Garland. Only indicting Trump should have been the big tell for everyone.
All of the calls for Trump to be jailed for his constant threats would not have solved the problem. Judge Chutkan, I hope, will use Trump's threats as a major justification for having a speedy trial, less opportunity for Trump to poison the well, which is lawyer speak.
Beastly Boy
(13,283 posts)since the judge's decision today does not set the trial date in stone. Between tomorrow and over a year from tomorrow is a safe time frame to expect a reasonable judge to set a reasonable date for any trial in any circumstances. Safe enough even for people like me who are averse to making predictions.

coupled with the Ga Rico trial... and then therre's the Florida trial.....
heeze, I almost forgot about the NY trial, I'm not clear if that is in limbo or if trial date was set..
I don't have to do a bloody thing to prepare for these cases, and I'm already feeling a bit frantic just trying to keep track.
How would any normal criminal (LOL) deal with 4 criminal trials nearly concurrently?

(35,075 posts)In August of 2003, 2007 and 2019, my top choice for nominee changed. Multiple times in 2019 and even 2020. Honestly, I don't even remember who I voted for in most primaries.
That said, refugs have a weird psychological issues so who knows if they are capable of changing their minds.
All I know is, regardless of how easy we might think it is to beat him, trump should not be allowed anywhere near that nomination. It is disrespectful to the entire nation to have someone like that at the top of any ballot. I understand that republicans do not respect themselves or anyone else, but if we allow him to be their nominee, this country will cross a red line that will signal to the entire world that we're unstable and approaching complete collapse.
