Holy shit! A trump-appointed judge just held a 1/6 rioter IN CONTEMPT and jailed him for five months for his behavior during trial.
Thats five months JUST for his conduct during trial!
Update to this: Judge McFadden held #Jan6 #CapitolRiot defendant Brandon Fellows, who insisted on representing himself, in CRIMINAL CONTEMPT and sentenced him to five months in jail for his conduct during the trial, per docket. He also awaits jury verdict.

A Jan. 6 defendant who represented himself in court after being accused of smoking marijuana in a senators office during the Capitol attack was held in criminal contempt on Tuesday, with the judge overseeing his trial smacking him with a five-month jail sentence before jury deliberations in the case were even set to begin. Brandon Fellows, 29, has been in custody since June 2021 on a federal felony charge of obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting, as well as a number of other misdemeanors. As his trial, which began last week, wrapped up on Tuesday, Fellows took the stand. Asked about sitting down in the office that belonged to Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Fellows remarked, I didnt know it was a senators desk. It felt very comfy. He also insisted that the rioters had the right to overthrow the government on Jan. 6. Later, as U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden explained to Fellows that he had forfeited his right to a rebuttal, Fellows replied, I would expect nothing less from a kangaroo court, according to NBC News. His contempt sentence was first reported by a Politico journalist. The jury is expected to begin deliberating on Fellows charges on Wednesday morning.

Not quite so humorous now, is it Brandon? Enjoy your time in jail, and then the prison sentence after that when you're convicted of your crimes.

(22,541 posts)Fellows faces one count each of obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; entering and remaining in certain rooms of the Capitol building; and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building.
He had been allowed to remain free after his January 2021 arrest but under increasingly restrictive conditions, until his June 2021 re-arrest. Federal prosecutors twice before asked for his release to be revoked. A judge disagreed both times, but first ordered him under home detention and then, on June 4, 2021, ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation and comply with all treatment recommendations.
However, prosecutors reported in a new motion on June 14, 2021 that he not only skipped the mental health evaluation but attempted to intimidate his supervising probation officer by contacting the officers mother.

How to achieve that mandate is to make one easy example with one, hoping all the others like him will take good note of the harsh punishment. Now if they don't care, then be judges guests.

(27,742 posts)Long ago there were state institutions, not that good but a damn measure better than a jail. The jails are loaded with lost people that have mental illness and it's a horrible mess. The jailers have no training or interest in taking care of this. It's a goddamn cruel ugly system that is completely ignored by "polite society" that says "he is better get off in jail" because he does maga shit. JFC already.
ExWhoDoesntCare
(4,741 posts)And those of us who have struggled with mental illness resent when people act like our condition is automatically a get-out-of-jail card because we're just too out of our bloody minds to know better. Unless the mental illness is full-blown schizophrenia, the mentally ill do know better. You're treating us like we're not capable of that--when we are.
Again, outside of full-blown untreated schizophrenia, being mentally ill does not mean that we aren't responsible for our actions, and it certainly doesn't permit us to be immoral or do immoral things without consequence. It doesn't mean that we can tell a judge to his face that he's running a kangaroo court and thenexpect tea and sympathy by crying mental illness.
In fact, most of us who've had a mental illness would never do anything like that--either the stupid remark, or the crying part.
He can try to blame his wretched behavior on mental illness, but i don't put much store in that sort of claim from a MAGAt. They're all known liars.
What is patently obvious is that he's an arsehole, and that's not a mental illness; it's a character deficiency.
