Republicans have taken a more favorable view of labor unions in recent years, but that hasnt stopped the party from attacking unionized teachers at the recent GOP presidential debate, with one candidate vowing to break the back of the teachers unions.
In the most recent results of the Gallup Social Series published ahead of Labor Day, support for unions is highest among Democrats and lowest among Republicans. Support among Republicans was 47 percent, down from 56 percent in the same poll a year ago but broadly on an upward trajectory since 2009, when it stood at 29 percent.
The Republican Party has sought to recalibrate its brand in the Donald Trump era, courting working class voters and even making a play for union endorsements. Earlier this summer, Trump released a video asking the United Auto Workers for its support. (The union has yet to publicly back a candidate, but it endorsed Joe Biden in 2020.)
Yet the GOPs overtures toward unionized workers does not extend to educators, who form a broad swath of the unionized workforce and remain one of the partys top targets. Thats probably in no small part because of GOP disapproval of the state of public education as well as the unions strong alliance with the Democratic Party.
Fully 74 percent of those the pollsters described as Republicans and Republican-leaning independents were either somewhat or completely dissatisfied with educational quality, another survey by Gallup found.

(27,248 posts)This months magazine had a two page article titled Joe Biden: A President who hears our voices.
NEA is the largest Labor Union in the country and they talk about how much the Biden Administration has prioritized funding for public schools, and has invested in schools and helped teachers forgive their student loan debt.
No wonder the repukes hate the teachers unions. And an educated populace is harder to control than a poorly educated one. I hear the orange maggot saying he loves the poorly educated.

(24,973 posts)and so did his republican cohorts. The rightwing have been trying to privatize schools for decades. I'm glad this is getting attention, but it is far from new. And it is done for profit.

Those supporting school choice (means I dont want my kids in school with them!) and allowing PUBLIC money to support private schools, whether they be church supported or other groups that will promote their own curriculum (and these same people talk about CRT et al as being why they want choice!).
Sweet Betsy DeVos tried her best to promote this School choice move (AKA: Let us make money from all of this!) and supporting family-related testing groups that could produce numbers supporting their goals (or whatever numbers anybody wanted to support their own program).
