GA: Are Savannah voters satisfied with the status quo on City Council?
With the recent end of the candidate qualifying period, the field is finally set for the Savannah city elections on Nov. 7. Thats just two months away.
If youre a new voter in town, you should know that the mayor and two at-large aldermen are elected by voters citywide. Each of the six districts also gets a seat on council.
The districts vary widely in demographics and in the issues that are most important to residents, so those races are largely determined by local conditions. If the results from 2019 are any indication, candidates for the district seats might win with as few as 2,000 votes.
But those district races will also be influenced by the three citywide contests and by voters feelings about the general direction of the city.
In 2015, widespread dissatisfaction with Mayor Edna Jackson and concerns about increasing crime led to the election of Eddie DeLoach and several other new faces on council. Voters had different concerns in 2019, but they again rejected the status quo.
