Utah citizen's ballot initiative could bring wine, spirits to grocery store shelves
ST. GEORGE Strict alcohol policies that have been in place in Utah since the end of the prohibition era could be upended and significantly changed if a citizen ballot initiative that seeks to privatize state liquor stores passes in 2024.
Called the Citizens Initiative to Amend and Modify Title 32B, the initiative would change how liquor is sold and taxed in the state and allow wine and spirits to be sold in grocery stores.
This is something that should have been done a long time ago, said Jeff Carter, a 20-plus year veteran of the restaurant and wine industry who authored the initiative.
Frustrated by dealing with what he called the states monopoly on alcohol sales, Carter also wrote a book under the pen name Spartacus Falanghina that highlights the absurdity of the states liquor policy.
