(19,382 posts)Im glad the conservatives are bringing attention to the horrific conditions of jails. Perhaps now maybe something will be done. That Fulton county jail should be completely shut down until a complete overhaul. I think they should have to have monthly inspections like restaurants and hotels do.
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...it's crossed my mind too, but then I start feeling that these particular people deserve bad conditions and then I realize how wrong I am to feel that way...
What it comes down to is... intentionally bad people like trump are the cause of so much more negativity and badness than just the direct affects of the actions they make. It's like a poison that just spreads throughout the water supply.

(19,382 posts)About 10 will have lasting terms. Id like to see a huge revamp on prisons. They do not need to be places of hell. Heck, we were basically on home confinement for two years with luxury items like a nice bed, tv, computer and all the food instacart could bring. And I still went stir crazy. I definitely think they could make jails useful as a tool without the nastiness.
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...the public vengeance aspect is damaging to the well-being of our society.
Rehabilition where needed, support of any kind to help people understand the value of living responsibly among others, these are the kind of things the time spent incarcerated could be applied to.

(4,741 posts)And were too poor to get representation that could have freed them, or at least wrangled probation or the like. I feel bad for the people still getting strung up for marijuana, or for stealing from a grocery store because they were hungry.
But the traitors? Nope. Not one shred of sympathy for them.

(16,385 posts)When I was 24, I was an idiot and got into my car totally wasted (.16 blood alcohol). I was swerving and got arrested. I was sentenced to four days of jail plus fines, classes, etc. Just being in there four days was the worst experience of my life. Since it was less than ten days, I was in holding cell the entire time. One night, another drunk was put in my cell and he was vomiting and shitting all night with me less than 7 feet away and obviously no door for his privacy on the toilet. The time went by so slowly. I learned my lesson and havent driven a car drunk ever since.
ProfessorGAC
(76,702 posts)We got detained for fighting when I was 17, but no cell. Just "Sit there & shut up until your parents get here." Sat on the bench near the booking desk. The guys who started the fight were held in a different room.
No charges for anybody. More embarrassing than anything else.
Oh, did I mention the fight was in a cop's front yard? Duh!

(9,354 posts)But generally, at least in my state, they can only call people on their phone list, which has to be approved - if they try to dial another number, they won't get through.
Cell phones (anything electronic) are contraband. Even the staff can't carry cell phones. But contraband does get in. This sunds like a call from a contraband cell phone to me.
The state the prison is in makes a big difference. Also, there is a difference between a prison and a jail. I'm pretty sure what Fulton County has there is a jail. Someone might be able to serve a short sentence (by which I mean one measured in weeks or less0 but a longer sentence would usually be served within the prison system. Within prisons and jails in any given state, the warden also makes a big difference. Maybe not on the food, though. My state has a four-week menu which repeats - a few items do repeat (cheese pizza on Friday for dinner is in all four weeks) but many don't The portions are ot huge, but it's edible. Any inmate with money in his account can buy food, either as snacks, or in case a particular meal is something he or she detests enough to want to skip it. Friends and relatives can also send them food and drink packages. I do realize, having read enough about investigation, including those done by planted "inmates," that not every state has food that good, or anything else. But we can't be the only one.
Some people, as the old (and very sardonic) saying goes, would bitch if they were hanged with a new rope. On a sunny day. With a crowd gathered. That certainly describes "Karen"s. I'll bet it also describes a lot of MAGAts .
Yes, some prisons are little pieces of hell. But what's true of any given prison - or jail - is not necessarily true of any other particular prison - or jail. Even if they are in the same state.

(9,056 posts)has been an issue forever. The GQP types thought it was fine that it was horrible until now when some of their own are going to have to deal with it.
