Happy Labor Day to all those who know how hard it is to punch a time clock everyday.
To those who have had to start over or reinvent themselves past the age of 50.
To all those still working because they cant afford to retire and told they didnt do things right.
To all those who ring a register, stand on concrete floors all day in factories, chemical plants, assembly plants and plastic plants. To those who jump in and out of delivery trucks all day long
not because they want to but because they have to! Not everyone can be a CEO or have a job they can put their feet up on their desk. You are the people who have built America and keep America running every single day!
Be KIND look out for the working class!
They are and always have been the backbone of America!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

(24,203 posts)Unions fought for workers to have a weekend. For workers to get overtime, benefits, retirement, and fair wages. Today I celebrate organized labor for building the middle class.

My husband worked 38 yrs in a factory with no union. All three shifts and worked himself in to a Forman position.
He then became keeper of the keys opening gates and doors.
He was well liked because he never asked the workers to do more than what he once did. He asked all of his coworkers to do it for him when asked. Never a problem.
Then it got sold and all management went first.
Everyone who wanted to stay at 13.00 and hour could.
At age 55 he took a job for UPS and they were rotten and never hired him in probably age related.
He proceeded and ruined both his knees while going to school.
He got a job with the state a Union job. And had bilateral knee replacement and will be there 10 yrs!
Looking forward to retirement.
I lost my job at age 59.

(5,870 posts)but I thought of the shop ladies there, and I know they have few rights. (It's come to work or be in trouble)
So, I will boycott today all by myself; this should be a major holiday and everyone should have the day off with pay. (That won't happen here in deep red country)

The guy on the left of me was an immigrant that had to sign his name with an X. On the other side was a Phd that couldnt afford to take a job in his field.
Put in 30 years and retired a little over 21 years ago.

(5,870 posts)such as 8-hour days, weekends, overtime pay, retirement, and so on.
In the Deep South unions are underrepresented and misunderstood.
To anyone who might ask (and few do) why I am pro-union, I keep it simple: Don't you want a retirement benefit plan? The top CEOs all have their plans and payouts; don't you think you deserve one?
I get a lot of shuffling and silence for answers. The most common answer is they don't want to pay the union dues. The retention rate for the lowest-paid workers is very low; turnover is high.
This is life in a right-to-work state. (right to fire; in other words)
Go Union!

(13,984 posts)one hour a week for the price of Union dues and people complain!
I worked for Rite Aid and we were the only Non Union Pharmacy because the Store Manager hated Unions almost as much as Obama!
Consequently when Walgreens threatened to buy us out I lost my job.
Now they cant keep good help and the pharmacist is overwhelmed!
My husband worked 38 years with no Union and so glad that he has one the last 10 years! Beyond greatful!
Thanks for your wonderful reply!
