(1,323 posts)Texas has around 30 million people.
California only has 40 for roughly 40 million people.. So, it's not THAT much different.

His lawyer is speaking for him
Paxton's lawyer was monologing while entering pleas for his client. The prosecutor(?) stood up and demanding he knock it off. He had to knock it off

(77,795 posts)The article below says his "Christian" supporters might lose him their support. No more than irreligious Drumpf lost any support from Christians. They go by the irreligious END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS. They dont care how immoral they are so long as they get their christo-fascist agenda items (anti-Choice, judges).
He had *everything* - wife, mistress, wingman, Uber, zombie cynical "christian" supporters...
PAXTON standing swaying on his feet, embarrassing but incapable of shame. His lawyer even blurs the legal difference between innocent and not guilty. Wifey as shamed as Pat NIXON.

.... David Brockman, a nonresident scholar at Rice Universitys Baker Institute for Religion and Public Policy, said Paxton had clear reasons to hide his infidelity.
Evidence of an extramarital affair would strike his supporters as hypocritical, he said. Hes promoted himself as a conservative Christian, a defender of biblical values and a guardian of conservative Christian sexual morality. So theres quite a bit of impetus to keep it secret.
Since its inception, Paxtons political life has been inextricably tied to the states conservative Christian voting bloc. He has said he first ran for office at the urging of Kelly Shackleford, whose First Liberty Institute has led the legal charge to infuse Christianity into public life. And Paxton has credited his first election to the Texas House in 2002 to a very simple strategy: Get the church out to vote.
In his 12 years as a legislator first as a House member, and then for two years in the Texas Senate Paxton was a reliable champion of Christian causes, backing bans on Planned Parenthood sex education materials in public schools and co-authoring a state constitutional amendment that would have barred businesses and individuals from being sued for declining to provide services on religious grounds. ....
