No more interstate travel without a passport, and they'll be paying import duties on US goods and export duties on their exports. Won't be voting in national elections, and won't be represented in Congress. Become a third world country overnight (they already qualify for that status except the the rest of the US is here to help them).

The GOP makes it very difficult for people of color and the poor to vote in Alabama. Combine that with gerrymandering, the power of conservative churches and the poor funding of public education and you have a recipe for a populace under the thumb of the bad guys.

There are many Democrats here. The deck is just stacked against us.

What if al refuses to implement the eventual federal map after exhausting all appeals?

Has a state ever just defied a federal order on a voting issue before?

against the citizens of Alabama.

There shouldn't be a single state within the United States that defies SCOTUS rulings. They have courts and AG's. They should use them.

All those people who still harbor anything but disgust for the Confederacy are apoplectic in fear. Trump's case is like a sword of Damocles hanging over their stubborn and misplaced pride filled heads.

There are southerners who have made their political careers stoking the flames of old fashioned southern racism. Newt and his sycophants from Alabama or Mississippi abound.. There are many who studied at the feet of the master. Lindsey Graham comes to.mind. How many denizens of low bearing have grown to fruit and power tugging at the apron strings of veteran racist demagogues since the great unpleasantness?

because you know the Alabama ruling class is not going to accept anything that doesn't gerrymander the rights of its African American citizens into oblivion. They'll throw a temper tantrum shrieking about states' rights, the Feds will scream about civil rights, the court case will drag on and on and only be resolved when all the current screamers are dead.

The issue won't be, of course, since so much of the south has never given up on federalism, the strong state and weak central government that had states ready to go to war with each other in the 1780s. Nobody gonna tell them what to do, no suh.
