https://news.yahoo.com/big-poll-showing-trump-biden-204914227.htmlA recent Wall Street Journal poll announced that most voters think Joe Biden is too old to be president for a second termand a 2024 matchup between Biden and Donald Trump would be evenly split. The poll has since been covered across multiple mainstream media outlets, including MSNBC, CNN, and Fox.
Theres just one problem: The poll was conducted in part by Trumps former campaign pollster.
The poll, which was published Monday, found that Biden and Trump are tied with 46 percent support each. But nearly three-quarters of voters say the president is too old to run again, the Journal article said. It has garnered widespread media attention and outrage. MSNBCs Joe Scarborough pointed out that Trump has been indicted four times and lied many, many more times, and yet he is tied with Biden simply because the latter is just three years older.

..Polls are no longer accurate. Not that they ever were. But polling methods were based on land lines. Pollsters no longer have any methodology.I have been saying this for years. Remember the red wave that was supposed to happen and didnt?
Polls. Oops. WAY WRONG.

(8,231 posts)The problem is most polls are based on random calls/contacts of voters, which can, if done properly, accurately model the popular vote, but the popular vote generally doesn't represent the effects of gerrymandering or the electoral college.
So, folks who don't understand that tend to think that "poll results" should be the same as "the election outcome," but they're not the same thing.

(23,749 posts)drumpf buying a poll? not a big deal. It's a free country.
The problem: A major media outlet picked up the poll, and either didn't look into its sources, or did look into the source and just shrugged it off, or did look into the source and published it because it supported a right wing agenda they share. In any of the three cases, whichever it is, they failed us.

It will always be a GOTV effort - and that may mean running the gauntlet of the GOP inserting obstacles into the actual voting process - whether requiring Voter ID and other crap, reducing early voting days, and closing polling sites, among other things, This might also include turning a blind eye to fake "election orgs" who send out misleading or even fraudulent voter registration and/or mail ballot form mailers to certain communities, etc.

(170,849 posts)although this time I think we are aware of and on guard for what can happen. But the media needs clicks so they will help magnify all the bullshit for ratings, even if they look stupid doing so. They learned nothing from 2020 or 2022 or perhaps better, the learned they can get away with being part of the problem and not the solution.
I know with the 2022 polling, you had the now-fired Nate Silver defending one set of polls that he included in his aggregates that were done by an outfit run by 2 high school students, arguing that they were somehow "legit", and on the same level with the more traditional outfits.
In the past, when it came to something like this WSJ poll with the funders being who they were - those were pretty much dubbed partisan "internal polls". Now they are promoting them (and by "them", that means GOP-sponsored polls) as "legit". But don't let someone like politicsusa do one and the freak out commences, as they get called out as "partisan".

(7,395 posts)show you the questions asked to get to these results.
They simply report the results, without the questions or context given.
For example, 75% of voters think Biden is too old.
Ok, so how were the questions posed to get these results?
Were they something like:
"If Biden's challenger is younger than him, do you think 80 is too old to be President?"
"If Trump is the challenger, at 77 years of age, is Biden too old at 80 to be President?"
They may report only on those that answered yes to the first question, without asking WHY.
They will likely ignore all the NOs on the second part, because it doesn't fit their narrative.
Then they will try to say something like "Nearly all voters say they want somebody younger"
when that was not asked.
Well, that isn't going to happen anyway, so effing deal with it.
