(39,305 posts)Lake Superior proves once again that it is the greatest of the Great Lakes, although I am partial to Lake Michigan, lol.

(39,305 posts)My family went to the UP on vacation one July when I was a kid. I grew up on Lake Michigan and there was nothing better than going for a refreshing dip on a hot day. It was hot that day in the UP, so my mom and I went to a beach on Lake Superior to cool off. Boy, did we ever. When I stuck my foot in the water, a shockingly cold jolt of pain shot from my foot to my armpit in about a second. The same thing happened to my mom.
We did not go swimming that day.

(39,305 posts)My dad had a buddy who had an old deer hunting cabin in the woods so we visited it while we were up there. Once again, my mom and I were driven away, this time by the deer flies and we spent most of the visit in the car. Those suckers could carry you away and their bite was vicious.
Ah, nature!

(39,305 posts)I lived between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix, so I always had a choice of some of the best beaches on the planet -- most within walking distance. I live inland now and really miss the lakes.

(4,232 posts)I grew up in Muskegon and then Grand Rapids back in the 70s and 80s, and nothing compared to the endless freshwater beaches. Too crowded? Just start walking up the beach until you find more seclusion. Sadly, the area was a horribly repressive Republican hellscape. This forced a move to the Eastern NY/Western MA Berkshires. Pretty much the only things I miss are the beaches and Meijer.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
