General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSeems to be one thing standing out as the one most important thing that hasn't changed in DU
for the last twenty years:
The number of phenomenally wonderful posters.
Whether it's breaking news, mini essays to make one think, Political cartoons, peeks at art and genuinely caring people under the same tent, DU has been there for me as a respite through times good and bad. I can't think of another website in the last two decades has this wonderful sanctuary for those who wish for respite from the pressures of the current political day or just share a frustration or two with others.
And of course, a hat tip to all those who made this happen and all those who help in herding the cats to keep DU, DU.
Thank you for putting up with me.

(2,973 posts)I agree we have many wonderful posters who help me learn things and get connected to political news and opinion I otherwise wouldn't have seen.

(15,083 posts)I've had my fair share of disagreements with other people here for the almost 2 decades I've been here, but for the most part, it's a welcome respite from all the other shit.
I love the videos, cartoons, pet stuff, and breaking news, as well as just regular discussions with people who don't want to end the world.
Thank you, DU! Thank you, Elad and EarlG, and Skinnner (whatever you're doing now!)!!!

(175 posts)I enjoy political discussions, but don't post here very often. The antiquated forum software makes real discussions all but impossible.

(60,844 posts)you don't post here often - that's obviously true, with only 116 posts in nearly 15 years.
What sites do you believe encourage real discussions more?

(130,497 posts)your difficulties in communicating here. Even I, with my glitchy pos computer, and lack of technical literacy, manage quite nicely. I am so sorry if your computer is worse than mine.

(11,869 posts)Can't believe I am still alive. Wish I had the comfort of getting a star but that is like a dream as things change (DU) the more they stay the same (me).

(12,443 posts)Hopped on the DU train in 2016. I think the community is the most caring I've run across, in addition to providing up-to-date news, cultural reports, and a variety of personal perspectives on the world as we know it.
So, I'm here for the long haul and count DU as my point of sanity and clarity.
It's been a very good ride.

(1,167 posts)I spent over a decade on FB trying to talk sense into the republicans and they finally kicked me,
Now here for a few months and while I do miss kicking republicans in debates, DU is a nice respite from those idiots.
In a year, I may have to go back on DU and kick some more butt, for now I am happy to be here!

(28,898 posts)the depth and breadth of knowledge and expertise among DUers is remarkable. No matter how arcane, specialized or complicated a topic/subject may be, someone on DU will be an expert in it.

(21,611 posts)want to to be (long to be) bored and not feel compelled to stress about all that presents today. Sooo many potentially species ending, life ending, democracy ending "situations" that it's hard to keep up without drinking hemlock. shout out to Socrates.

(28,811 posts)then I got into the new DU4. I love it. Just easy peasy. When it comes back I will happily switch. It's definitely an upgrade, but oh so easy to navigate.
Yes, I love DU. We can disagree once in a while, but we all want the same result; a big Democratic win to bring our country to it's senses and move forward, like President Biden is somehow managing to do..being only 4 years younger than Joe, I have to admire his drive and stamina. The man's incredible

(4,629 posts)You are one of those "phenomenally wonderful posters".
DU is my go to place to find solace, camaraderie and serenity. I joined shortly after tfg, took office. I thought I was the only person feeling a sense of astonishment, indignation and outrage every time there was reporting on him in the media.
Since his campaign began I questioned his over the top references, to the "Big State", and Russia. It came to a head with his with his dark appalling Inaugural Address and every day after. When I stumbled on to DU, I felt I'd reached the watering hole.
Thank you, for posting your fine essay, and thank you, for all the wonderful posters, and administrators who make DU possible.
