(9,372 posts)implies recognizing the image as the same species (maybe). I does not necessarily imply recognizing oneself. If you wanted to attack yourself you wouldn't so it in a mirror.

(15,636 posts)'behavioral science' is turning out to be kind of fragile. (not terribly well supported) I won't dive deeply - but scientists have spent generations (almost deliberately?) dismissing and underestimating the abilities ... (while pet owners routinely exaggerate ..) And then there's the problem of trying 'overlay' our own experience of perceptions and consciousness - to explain and define what we observe in other beings.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
