God forbid something should happen to HIM and SHE should become president. But they can't say that, so they make it about age.

We tend to pussyfoot around it because we don't want to be accused of misogyny. But Accusing Democrats of misogyny because we point out it exists is exactly like Republicans calling us racist because we know and speak up that racism exists.
I am absolutely certain that Hillary's loss in 2016 was at least as much due to misogyy as it was to Russian interference or any other corrupt reason. And in the current political climate, we simply cannot afford another mistake like that.

In the summer and fall of 2016, I was just starting to grapple with the fallout of the sexual assault I had endured the year before. Still, even in that state, I could sense the sexism and misogyny that T**** made publicly palatable to the Grand Old Patriarchy, ahem, Party. It was so thick I could almost taste it.

(5,175 posts)We, Democrats and independents, did elect our first Black president. That speaks for itself. And then we
elected our first woman and Black vice-president, sexism and racism in the party withstanding.
While Biden is the oldest person to be elected president, we have yet to elect our first octogenarian to the
office. Biden's age has brought agism, front and center, as the least appreciated ism in our culture.
And agism definitely exists in a party that is dependent to a large extent on younger voters.
Voters who may be quick to call out others for the many other isms while not recognizing their
own prejudices toward older people.

(35,601 posts)Kamala Harris' race. My concern is how she has been so vilified the last several years where she could not win the election if anything happens to Joe Biden over the next year. I had the exact same feeling about Hillary Clinton and voted for her but never thought she had a chance of winning for the same reason.
I remember when we were attacked on DU if we didn't buy the Blue Wall, she got this line.
![](/emoticons/facepalm.gif)
We certainly know now that Trump would never go after the SOSs in the swing states to give him the win and Comey would never come out with some pre-election sabotage and she certainly didnt get 3,000,000 more votes than the Orange fool.

(7,928 posts)...are the same ones that voted for someone who was even older in the 2020 primary.
Just sayin'!
It ain't about age for most of these people. It's just a convenient excuse to hate on who the majority of Democrats have selected as their standard bearer. It's Joe age, it was Hillary emails or her paid speeches (heaven forbid!). When Kamala was the bright shiny thing, it was her history as a prosecutor; when Buttigieg won the Iowa caucus, it was his donors. When it was Beto, it was his connections to the oil and gas industry. You can go on and on.
You can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time.
And many of the same people who happily and proudly voted for Obama turned around and criticized him as well once he got into office and actually had to start making tough decisions. Just look at 2010 or even the lower turnout for him in 2012.
betsuni
(26,289 posts)And people bringing up Obama seem to forget how deeply unpopular Republicans were because of a destroyed economy, wars, scandals after eight years. Whoever was the Democratic nominee was going to win. Like the Chris Rock joke that G.W. Bush screwed up so badly that he made it impossible for a white man to win that election.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)and large numbers of the right, not just the MAGAs, have been trained to irrational, destructive hostility toward anything Democrat and anything liberal. Including liberal democracy.
Starting from a base of milder form of the same that's always been there. Racism's always been there also, but it's the largest driver only for a minority. Her race, AND GENDER!, are certainly a large handy supply of fuel for the bonfire, though.
Long before a black or female president was even imagined possible, conservatives were subverting elections and considering themselves great patriots for keeping "undeserving" sorts from voting in their elections. Future confederate states didn't allow Lincoln on their ballots, "undeserving" being all white men who would have voted for him.
Notably, the pledge of allegiance they long ago forced on our nation, described as "under god," is not to principles or institutions of democracy or the Constitution, but to "the flag." Now, many carry tRump flags and dream of making ours stand for a RW authoritarian state purged of liberalism. And Democrats.
And not to leave off, the RW war on the rights and freedoms of half the nation -- women -- is very real. Everything they do would in one way or another depower women.

(132,299 posts)Kamala Devi Harris was born in Oakland, California,[9] on October 20, 1964.[10] Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a Tamil Indian biologist, whose work on the progesterone receptor gene stimulated advances in breast cancer research.[11] She came to the United States from India in 1958, as a 19-year-old graduate student in nutrition and endocrinology at the University of California, Berkeley,[12][13] and received her PhD in 1964.[14] Kamala Harris's Jamaican American father, Donald J. Harris, is of African and Irish ancestry.[15] He is a Stanford University professor of economics (emeritus) who arrived in the United States from British Jamaica in 1961, for graduate study at UC Berkeley, receiving a PhD in economics in 1966.[16][17] Donald Harris met his future wife Shyamala Gopalan at a college club for African-American students (though Indian, Gopalan was allowed to join).[18][19]

They purposely mispronounce her name, dont refer to her by her title, and say that the majority of Democratic voters dont like her and dont want her on the 2024 ticket. They say she hasnt done anything, but of course they simply dont want to acknowledge and report on what amazing work she is doing in DC, across the nation and around the world.
