Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner removed from Rock Hall leadership after controversial
NEW YORK (AP) Jann Wenner, who co-founded Rolling Stone magazine and also was a co-founder of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has been removed from the halls board of directors after making comments that were seen as disparaging toward Black and female musicians.
---
Asked why he didnt interview women or Black musicians, Wenner responded: Its not that theyre inarticulate, although, go have a deep conversation with Grace Slick or Janis Joplin. Please, be my guest. You know, Joni (Mitchell) was not a philosopher of rock n roll. She didnt, in my mind, meet that test, he told the Times.
Of Black artists you know, Stevie Wonder, genius, right? I suppose when you use a word as broad as masters, the fault is using that word. Maybe Marvin Gaye, or Curtis Mayfield? I mean, they just didnt articulate at that level, Wenner said.
Wenner co-founded Rolling Stone in 1967 and served as its editor or editorial director until 2019. He also co-founded the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which was launched in 1987.
In the interview, Wenner seemed to acknowledge he would face a backlash. Just for public relations sake, maybe I should have gone and found one Black and one woman artist to include here that didnt measure up to that same historical standard, just to avert this kind of criticism.

(37,113 posts)Asked how he chose the musicians to feature, Wenner replied: When I was referring to the zeitgeist, I was referring to Black performers, not to the female performers, OK? Just to get that accurate. The selection was not a deliberate selection. It was kind of intuitive over the years; it just fell together that way. The people had to meet a couple criteria, but it was just kind of my personal interest and love of them. Insofar as the women, just none of them were as articulate enough on this intellectual level, he said.

finally manages to "articulate" why the glaring lack of copy/content of women and Black artists.
A pathetic asshole.
I would add the word "magazine" to the title of the OP as I thought it was about the group, not the magazins and I was prepared to be disappoint as I'm a Stones fan.

he wont have to worry about me reading his book, or even borrowing it from the library.
Time for someone to write the book about Hidden Masters in Rock and Roll!

(6,972 posts)Thank heaven it wasn't Jagger, Richards, or Wyman. Just that weenie Wenner, co-founder of Rolling Stone magazine. He's always been a weenie.
I thought what an odd reference for a sec.
Like Co-founder of Simon and Garfunkel.

Deeply racist and sexist. His words about Black and female artists are truly painful in that they reflect a history and system that so undervalues the contributions of women and people of color. But that he then obliviously congratulates himself and his friends for their contributions to social change - now thats just cringe-worthy. What an embarrassment this guy is!
I am curious though - will these friends comment on their inclusion in a book thats now been explicit that its premise is that women and Black artists dont have equal intellectual and musical capacity? Isnt their participation a sort of endorsement that they also believe they are in fact the masters? Bono, Bruce?

Well this interview proves a coupla things. 1) Talent and intellect are not contagious, and 2) The Generation that promoted Peace, Clean Water and Air, Women's Rights and Universal Suffrage, whose mantra was " Don't trust anybody over 30!" also produced it's proportional share of ambitious dunderheads. Rock n Roll wouldn't exist without Robert Johnson, all the Blues Masters, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. Go ahead and count the white guys all you want. And, Please guys, don't throw all of the Baby Boomers out with the bathwater. The Chamber of Commerce types and frat boys always outnumbered the Freaks.
