I just saw him on Jim Acosta's show on CNN critiquing Kristen Welker's interview with cheato. He was scathing. I'm not talking about mildly critical. He acknowledged that keeping cheato from lying is very difficult, but said that she should have been fact checking him in REAL TIME. He said that a producer could be sitting there to help with that if necessary. But, basically, he made the point that fact checking after the interview is not sufficient. And he said that letting these lies get out is dangerous.
He also said that all journalists know that he has a proven track record of lying, so that treating him like a normal politician is very dangerous for our democracy. He wondered why the media is still not able to interview this person in an effective way.
Oh, and after that he said Drew Barrymore has reversed her decision to cross the picket line by resuming production her show due to public pressure.
All in all, it was a refreshing 10 minutes or so on CNN.

(7,964 posts)While Licht was there. So criticizing Welker won't cost him his job and not sure why you would think that. His new bosses are journalistic veterans.

(25,527 posts)He holds the position that Brian Seltzer (not sure I have that name correct) had before he was let go by Licht, I believe. I certainly don't want him to lose his job.

(7,964 posts)Yes it was Stelter. I never thought you wanted him to lose his job. I just wondered why you thought he might, but you were being kind of facetious.

(114,692 posts)I also think it is about time the media critique each other when the stakes are this high.

(25,527 posts)I'm tired of the way even competing beltway journalists stick together when it comes to dealing with tfg.

(9,961 posts)They are all buddies, so nobody calls out the other journalists who are destroying our country.
Which is exactly what they are doing!!!

(11,851 posts)It's easy to criticize when you're not doing it. Did she get him to make some newsworthy statements? She did. She certainly did much better than the CNN town hall.
senseandsensibility
(25,527 posts)but I have seen almost no criticism from any journalists, whether they are on MSNBC or not. They should be free to do so, but I have not seen it. He called her out by name and it was refreshing. You have a point about the CNN lovehall, as I like to call it, but from what I remember Darcy was highly critical of that too.

(11,851 posts)... but it appears from the clips I've seen that Welker did not let him walk all over her.

(Take the time to see both interviews before you make judgment.)

(998 posts)Whenever he lied I'd chime in with, "that's not true." So I'd basically be sayiing that after every sentence that comes out of his mouth.
I'd then repeatedly remind the audience that after the interview a list of fact checks will appear on the screen.
Because if you catch Trump in a lie and call him out on it he'll just double down wifh even more lies.
But letting him spew BS uninterrupted with zero pushback is a disservice to viewers.

The clip is worth watching if you have some time.
I feel like Weissmann and Neal Katyal might be a little more on the ball than Mr. Darcy, but I didnt see Darcy so I cant say for certain.

(604 posts)Awhile back Trump was interviewed by 60 Minutes and when the interviewer started fact checking him to his face he walked off the set.

(25,527 posts)Oh well, if I was the interviewer, I'd tell him not to let the door hit him on the way out.

(7,898 posts)Not a Welker fan. Didnt see the interview, but I have not noted CNN to be much better at interviewing politicians. The best interviewer used to work for Axios. I believe it was Jonathan Swan. His questions were pointed and he was always prepared.

(3,138 posts)I would be after confessions. Let him lie and babble uninterrupted if I could have a confession or two on tape. Who would a fact check be for anyway? Certainly tfg doesn't give a shit. Nor do his impaired cultists. Dems don't need to be told, because we already know the lies. What we might not know yet are some juicy details to be used in court. Babble on.

(15,525 posts)contesting the election was his idea, Jan 6 was his idea.
So that negates his 'my lawyers and others around me advised me...' defense.
The interview wasn't that much of a disaster.

(15,525 posts)Interviewing Trumpy was a mistake. Calling him 'Mr. President' was a mistake. The whole things was a bad choice because publicly held corporations own our media, and the fiduciary responsibility of their executives is ONLY to generate profits for shareholders and to hell with everything else. It is an evil system, Doc. It really is. The people who conceived of this clearly are out for ratings, because ratings = higher prices for ads and that = PROFITS.
I get that. I was merely pointing out that Trump's own utter stupidity, and his propensity to let his tongue lead a life of its own, may have presented prosecutors with a proverbial 'smoking gun.' He did admit it was 'his idea.' We can both fondly hope that this will go against him at his upcoming trials, and perhaps result in him being put behind bars where he belongs.
Not to be Pollyanna here, but if this is the case then we have made lemonade out of lemons in spite of our profit-over-truth corporate owned media.

(2,600 posts)I did a double take when I heard Darcy, who I dont recall having seen before. His criticism was extremely harsh but clearly heartfelt. Whatever you may think of Welker and the interview, it was refreshing to see a commentator speak quite so boldly and without fear.
