We've all been there: starving, desperate for a quick bite, but incapable of peeling yourself off the couch. That's the beauty of food-delivery appsor at least it is until your DoorDash driver spits on the food you're so excited to devour during a Netflix binge-a-thon.
Unfortunately for one DoorDash customer that's exactly what happened. A 13-year-old boy left what he thought was a good tip for his order, which only required a half-mile trip. But then the clearly disgruntled driver was caught on a Ring camera spitting on the food, The New York Post reports.
The camera captured the Florida-based delivery driver setting the food down, snapping a quick pic for proof, and then repeatedly spitting on the order while angrily mumbling something clearly unkind.
"He got angry because maybe he thought the tip was small, and he spit in the food," Crisanto told the news outlet WPLG Local 10. "If it wasn't because of the camera, no one knows. I wanted to vomit, because who does that?"

(20,005 posts)I have read that drivers refuse to deliver the orders that don't tip or that don't tip enough.
I don't ever order food. I've heard too many horror stories.

(71,542 posts)In Ohio is that Dashers refuse orders with known bad tippers. That is a better solution than spitting. If you can't afford a tip, cook your own food or get up and pickup your own order.

(130,538 posts)I hire a guy to shovel my snow in the winter because I don't want to do it. I'm lazy and he has a job. People order meals for delivery because they're lazy; delivery people have work. What's the problem?

(130,538 posts)People hire other people to do things they are too lazy to do themselves, such as, apparently, going out to buy their own food. By that measure you are also lazy for not mowing your lawn or shoveling your snow or pruning your trees or painting your house or driving yourself somewhere. Because you are a lazy slob who doesn't want to get off your couch and do those things yourself, you hire someone else to do it. If it weren't for lazy people everywhere, a lot of people wouldn't have jobs.

(290 posts)I am a non-driving senior adult. I rely on DoorDash primarily to delivery groceries (we have no cab company in town). I like to eat out occasionally like everyone else (just for a change of pace) but the only way I can do it is via DoorDash unless I order a sandwich delivery or pizza delivery.
When I was working (I'm a teacher who retired this year) I would sometimes DoorDash simply because I didn't have time to make supper. I'd get home late after work and need to be working on lessons for the next day so I'd order a quick meal through DoorDash. It wasn't because I was too lazy to cook.
There are many reasons people choose this service. And overall I'm pretty sure it not something most people do daily due to cost. Even in my small town its quite expensive. A basic hamburger and fries meal from McDonalds is nearly $17 with fees and tips (and I subscribe to the DashPass discount program). A restaurant meal can range from $25-$30. Not cheap....
Ocelot II
(130,538 posts)There doesn't have to be a reason (and "laziness" is a perfectly acceptable reason anyhow). Sometimes people need food delivered; sometimes they just want it. Delivery services exist to satisfy those needs/wants, and no explanation is needed. Somebody gets on their high horse and sneers at you for not going out to buy your food and then bring it home to cook it yourself? Tell 'em you're just lazy that way, and MYOB.

(71,542 posts)It is not cheap. Maybe dashers think how nice it is to be able to afford to order food and have it delivered. Also, I believe do have a choice in taking an order or not as they should.

Nice.
Is everyone else who works front end allowed to spit on rude customers? Wait staff, bartenders, hostesses, cashiers, retail stickers, library staff, drive-through window workers, receptionists?
Who is allowed to do this? Please list the categories.

(130,538 posts)And the people who provide the food shouldn't implicitly threaten to defile it even if the recipient isn't nice enough to suit them. It's shit behavior either way.
Chi67
(1,285 posts)It's terrible, but it does happen, unfortunately. All I was saying before is that this happens a lot more than you think, given my own experience. I even said it's not right, but some other poster had to read into what I said, as usual.
For example, every restaurant in existence has roaches or some kind of pests. But people lose their minds when they see one single roach in a restaurant. I'm not saying it's right, I am saying it happens.

(44 posts)until after the driver has completed the order. Honestly we assumed that's how it works as it's not really to the Corporation's benefit to tell the driver beforehand. Uber/Lyft drivers don't know their tip until afterwards, why should food delivery be different?

(1,719 posts)I do DoorDash and if I don't see the pay well I have a choice not to take the order. Anyone doing that without deliberately trying to smear other dashers is either an idiot or has gotten too hopeful of a surprise tip (DoorDash often suppresses the true pay of an order to discourage cherry picking, which leads to a gamification in that an order may surprisingly pay higher than was initially promised...or it may not.)
lillypaddle
(9,606 posts)more than I should, tbh. I use delivery because I'm home bound, elderly, physical problems, and I don't have a car. Look, they (the restaurants) jack those menu prices up, so you are paying a surcharge for the napkins and styrofoam containers. Or that's what I think. Then, EVEN IF you have an annual membership of $120 for using DoorDash, they also add a fee to the bill, and the restaurant also adds an additional fee. Then there is a tip. Oh, to get free delivery you have to order a minimum of $12. See where I'm going?
Almost wherever you order from, be it a "real restaurant" or McDonalds, it is still almost $20 per order. No, that isn't the fault of the Dasher, however, when the trip is only a mile or so (I am surrounded by fast food places) I usually feel justified in giving 10%, which is usually about $2.50. Now if the eatery is 5 miles away, I'll bump that up. I am in no position financially to be able to tip the way I used to. At a restaurant, the server is bringing you things, and helping you with what you want or need. That is a totally different story, and I still always tip 20%.
Fucking places need to pay a living wage, I can't afford to help them do that.

(71,542 posts)someone who puts gas in his/her car, picks up your order, and drives to your house to deliver it? Unbelievable. 10%? No, I would not deliver your food period. And don't be surprised if gas going up in price means some of your orders won't be picked up.
