I would strongly advise against reading anything about this man's personal convictions and motivations into that performance. He's an actor playing a role, and doing a damned fine job of it. The fact that he's so convincingly creepy is evidence of his talent and his mastery of his craft, nothing more.

A really good actor can play all sorts of roles well. Really nice guys can play awful villains and disgusting sleazebags can play charming and innocent characters. (Case in point: Bill Cosby.)

Seriously, if an actor is really good at what he does, it's almost impossible to tell what kind of person he is from watching a performance.

Regarding “do anything illegal”, add “like travel to another state.” That would piss off even the “ my daughter = my property “ types who might not like being told what they can do with their property.
