I wish he could live forever! He will,of course, live on in his good works and his inspiring example. We can do our part by supporting the Carter Center and its ongoing mission for world peace, human rights, and fighting diseases.

"Maybe its the peanut butter ice cream he still enjoys. Or the fact that his first-place Atlanta Braves are cruising toward the playoffs and he wants to see another World Series. Or as many of his loved ones and former advisers suggest, maybe he is just too stubborn to follow anyone elses timetable.
Whatever the reason, seven months after entering hospice care, Jimmy Carter is still hanging on, thank you very much, and is in fact heading toward his 99th birthday in just over a week. While nearly everyone, including his family, assumed that the end was imminent when he gave up full-scale medical care last winter, the farmer-turned-president has once again defied expectations.
We thought at the beginning of this process that it was going to be in five or so days, Jason Carter, his grandson, said in an interview, recalling the former presidents decision to check out of the hospital and go into hospice care at his home in Plains, Ga., last February. I was down there with him in the hospital and then said goodbye. And then we thought it was going to be in that week that it was coming to the end. And its just now been seven months.
Mr. Carter was already the longest-living president in American history, but his staying power even in hospice has captured the imagination of many admirers around the world. It has generated an extended farewell, one that was unplanned yet remarkably affectionate for a president who was turned out of power by voters after a single term yet transformed his legacy with decades of service that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize.
In the months since he returned to his small-town home to meet his final fate, the outpouring of remembrances has been heartening to his family and friends. Instead of a memorial service he could not attend, Mr. Carter has experienced a living eulogy, soaking up tributes from around the globe. Relatives and advisers say he is aware of what has been written and said, and is deeply grateful."...(more)

(16,658 posts)My wife was pissed cause he stopped to talk to me as he was signing my books. He wanted to know about a pin I was wearing for a local election for Supervisor of Elections.
The one thing I remember vividly were his eyes. They were this amazing light blue color that just seemed to pull you in.
As my Stepmother says, he was the last true Christian Presidents we have had.

(71,526 posts)But if he is going to go soon, (I hate to say this), the sooner, the better. If he dies soon, President Biden will ensure that he is memorialized, mourned, and laid to rest with dignity and the staggering levels of respect he deserves and has earned.
If TFG is re-elected ( *spit* ) he will heap a torrent of abuse, slander, and unconscionable invective against a man he is not fit to be in the same area code with.
No other Republican if he gets in office will behave much better. Only President Biden will behave like a President for President Carter.

(13,854 posts)I've always believed that his sanctions against the USSR and support for the Afghanistan resistance were critical to the collapse of the Soviet economy but he doesn't get a lot of credit for it. Sadly, when the Soviet regime fell, Bush was president and sent a bunch of free-marketers to consult on the recovery, ultimately resulting in a corrupt, authoritarian regime. Carter's actions were widely criticized at the time, including his use of human rights arguments in foreign policy. He was the first president to do so.
So this is my standard response when the media says he "transformed his legacy" after he left office. I think his presidential legacy is nothing to sneeze at.

(6,047 posts)It was his appointment of Fed Chairman Volcker who ended stagflation and created the economy later wrongly credited to Reaganomics.
Jimmy Carter stated in 1979 that Volcker's hawkish interest rate policy would hurt him politically in the short run, but benefit the country later and it did, leading to the low inflation/interest rates and growth post 1983. He knowingly sacrificed himself for the USA.

(7,386 posts)Carter was president when the U.S.broke the backs of the OPEC cartel of the 1970s. His push for energy efficiency eventually caused oil prices to plummet and the economic boom was on.
Carter put solar panels on the White House roof to show how its done, only to have the Republican Reagan tear them down in solidarity with OPEC and worldwide petrostates.

(1,884 posts)To focus on Jimmy Carter, who lead a life of decency as he always worked to help those less fortunate. An inspiration for others, trying to do good with their life.
Barack followed in his footsteps and now Joe. We are all better for being served by these good hearted people.

(9,080 posts)Obama used to threaten that he wanted to replace the Nixon bowling alley with a basketball court, but he never did. I think he was just joking when he'd say that - he's a lousy bowler!
AFAIK the bowling alley is still there and still being used, though I'd bet TFG never bothered.

(26,168 posts)Surprisingly, the first restoration of solar power to the White House came from W.
The National Park Service, which manages the White House complex, installed a nine kilowatt, rooftop solar electric or photovoltaic system, as well as two solar thermal systems that heat water used on the premises.
Two solar thermal systems, one to heat the pool and spa and one to provide domestic hot water, were also installed.
With solar systems popping up on homes, businesses and farms across the country, its most appropriate to have solar providing energy for Americas most recognizable home, said Glenn Hamer, executive director at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).
With the Obama administrations latest additions, the White House will increase its solar capacity with 20 to 50 new panels, USA Today reports. The administration added that the installation should pay for itself within eight years.
More background:

President Obama was actually the third US President to install solar. President George W. Bush was the first to install a solar electric system at the White House, powering parts of the White House grounds, but he did so quietly. A second installation by Bush helped warm the presidential swimming pool.
(Lots more about the history of Carter's solar panels earlier in the article. It's pretty interesting.)

This muthafukkin mostly corporate, reich-winged greedy for ad dollars, views and clicks of their monemaker tRump media stay fucking with Pres. Biden and are still talking abo and obsessed with how old he is. Look at tRump. That sob is not Dorian Gray, and is not aging backwards. The asshole is mentally deranged, mentally ill, his health is declining and HIS mostly corporate right-winged media still talks about Pres.Biden being too old and now they're beating the drums about Kamala not having any experience if something were to happen to Pres. Biden if he should win a 2nd term. HIS media normalizes his ass. I can't

(26,168 posts)I had no idea Carter would win, but I was very glad when he did. Unfortunately, by the time I got a chance to vote for him on his second bid, he lost. The country was the poorer for it.
I adore Jimmy, and I'm glad his last days are happy and peaceful.
