(13,659 posts)Did you live without air conditioning this summer? Do you walk to work? To the dentist? To take a vacation? Do you subsist on oatmeal?
The boomers did no more than what every generation since the dawn of humankind has done : try to live better than their parents did, and give their children a chance at an even better life. There was no cultural pressure to save the earth when the boomers were young. Im older than them, so I know. Youre imputing todays norms onto a time when those norms did not exist.
No fairer than judging you on some norm that will appear 30 years in the future and about which you now know nothing.

DemocraticPatriot
(5,410 posts)and hardly run the air conditioning AT ALL, even though I do have central air which works... think I ran it no more than 6 hours all summer...
Even through the hottest part of the summer, the lower level of the house never passes above 70 degrees... and for humidity discomfort, I get by with a box fan....
I do this to save money on electricity, but making less of a "carbon footprint" is not beyond my consideration, either...
Just an aside, since you asked the question about 'air conditioning'---
Of course, if I did not have a basement to live in, it might be another matter...

(7,053 posts)Global climate continues to change at a frightening speed, said Fatih Birol, executive director of the IEA at an online press event, but there are legitimate reasons to be hopeful. The spectacular increase in clean energy is keeping the door still open. The report found that solar power capacity increased nearly 50% in the last two years and electric car sales increased by 240%.

(1,167 posts)Solar power can be the change we need.
Been backing solar for 40 years. And fighting climate deniers for 30. I am holding fast to that which is good.

(22,456 posts)...asked if Boomers were mad about the burgers and pickups (that all ages are still eating and driving).
It seems to be a post that, admirably, is trying to "rally the troops".

LiberaBlueDem
(1,167 posts)Post about how big tech is hurting children
" So were immersing kids in this culture, that tells them that me first is more important than cooperation; a culture that encourages them to think by impulse, to consume, consume, consume. Given the crisis of global warming, it is basically encouraging kids to adopt values that will ultimately destroy themselves and the planet."
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)I'm a boomer myself and I will very proudly stand up and say:
Hell yes I am mad about this!
As the OP points out, WE, as a country, as a world, and as a species, are NOT doing anywhere near enough to confront and mitigate the damages our lifestyles are causing.
We can change this.
A recent post I just made points out that it would probably be CHEAPER for us to speed the transition away from fossil fuels than it is to continue our day-to-day use of them;
"The researchers point out, however, that coal is still hanging around like a bad smell because considerations such as jobs, tax payments, political constraints, or financial liquidity keep governments investing in coal even when renewables actually have a better pay-off.
It isn't an age thing, it never was, but yes, This Boomer joins with ALL the other age groups and says "Yes, I am Mad!"
LiberaBlueDem
(1,167 posts)But not enough of us are mad the right way.
I am proud to say I have convinced people to put up 3 different solar arrays

The hockey stick...
We're on the fast track to Palm Trees in Antarctica.
Half the planet will be inhospitable and the other half wracked by war for food and water.
No amount of Teslas and solar panels will change that.
Sorry to be a downer but it's true.
Humans FA'd... and are about to FO...
LiberaBlueDem
(1,167 posts)Just don't see a future in that
Plus a whole lot of innocent humans are gonna suffer if we don't pay attention and do what is right.
WarGamer
(18,855 posts)If half the global population disappeared tomorrow...
And fossil fuel use dropped by 75%, CO2 levels would continue to rise for decades, triggering a quickening of CO2 release as more ice melts, etc...
We're simply done.
We should put all efforts into CO2 capture like Bill Gates is promoting... and even that is just a stop gap measure.
LiberaBlueDem
(1,167 posts)But if we just stop emitting co2 we would not have to build co2 capture
And the best co2 capture are trees so if we stop logging
And if we quit flying and drove nothing but solar powered EVs...
WarGamer
(18,855 posts)And they'll scream BIAS.
The West was built on dirty energy but we expect Chinese farmers to continue using oxen instead of diesel tractors?
Every American has a car or two... but we expect Indians to use mass transit?
LiberaBlueDem

But..... there is of course the nuclear war game we all play.

(22,456 posts)I'm proud to say I'm a member of THIRD ACT https://thirdact.org/ ,
From the THIRD ACT website;
Experienced Americans are the fastest-growing part of the population: 10,000 people a day pass the 60-year mark. That means that theres no way to make the changes that must be made to protect our planet and society unless we bring our power into play.
Were used to thinking that humans grow more conservative as they age, perhaps because we have more to protect, or simply because were used to things the way they are. But our generations saw enormous positive change early in our livesthe civil rights movement, for instance, or the fight to end massive wars or guarantee the rights of women. And now we fear that the promise of those changes may be dying, as the planet heats and inequality grows.
But as a generation we have unprecedented skills and resources that we can bring to bear. Washington and Wall Street have to listen when we speak, because we vote and because we have a largemaybe an overlargeshare of the countrys assets. And many of us have kids and grandkids and great grandkids: we have, in other words, very real reasons to worry and to work.
LiberaBlueDem
(1,167 posts)Then all of our efforts melt. I for one, have a hard time saying too bad, so sad.

(13,384 posts)what do you expect us to do that we haven't done?
I reuse bags, drive a Prius, live in a small house, rarely fly, vote for all people that want to help environment. When I was young we took our bottles back to the store to be reused, same with milk bottles. We fixed our appliances instead of throwing them away.
What have you personally done?
Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)..that's the kind of positive, pro-active attitude we need more of!
There really are too many Americans who just don't care, they don't seem to realize they are ultimately hurting themselves, their children, and their grandchildren.
And that's a great question we should keep asking ourselves:
"What have you personally done?"
Hekate
(100,133 posts)I guess its more fun poking at people whove done the work their whole lives.
So what have you personally done to make the planet a better place?
DemocraticPatriot
(5,410 posts)Myself, I consider it fortunate that I have neither, for that very reason.
I recycle, I dry my clothes off of lines in the basement to avoid burning more natural gas,
and I drive as little as possible...
One unfortunate fact is that other largely populated countries like China, India and Russia are doing more damage to the environment than the United States, and no matter how green we go, we have little means to force them to improve...
Yeah, I'm getting old, and grateful that I won't have to live through what may be to come, but I do what I can....
Now, why is your post so 'accusatory' ?? Seems like part of the 'setting generations against each other' thing that some here have warned about....
Anyway, if you want to blame 'boomers' for their environmental failures, I would suggest that Republican-supporting boomers are much more to blame than anyone posting on this site.... maybe take your complaints to 'RedState' or such...
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
