Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez @AOC · 36mHeres what went down: we just won a clean 45 day gov extension, stripped GOPs earlier 30% cuts to Social Security admin etc, staved off last minute anti-immigrant hijinks, and averted shutdown (for now).
People will get paychecks and MTG threw a tantrum on the way out. Win-win

(12,744 posts)I thought the Dems sacrificed all the Ukrainians to Putin and gave themselves a raise?
At least thats what I read here
.

(94,256 posts)...Dems made certain our own government is funded.

(439 posts)This was a simple "continuing resolution". Sometimes called a "stop gap spending bill". This bill keeps the gov running for another 45 days (at current spending levels) to give more time to negotiate a final spending bill. Yeah, it didn't include any additional funds for Ukraine beyond what has already been allocated, but it also dropped the Republican demand to cut SS benefits and other nonsense.
Summary: this is NOT the final bill, this just keeps the lights on for 6 weeks to allow negotiations to continue. Nobody has been abandoned yet.
Hopefully the extra 6 weeks of Republican dysfunctional antics further erodes their support in the public's eye and makes their bargaining position even weaker than it is now.

(94,256 posts)...imagine holding up funding for our own government over Ukraine funding.
Republicans weren't going to vote for it today. We'll have the exact same fight tomorrow without putting out govt. funding at risk, and not taking the bait to get blamed for holding up that funding over Ukraine.
Besides:
Andrew Desiderio @AndrewDesiderio · 57m
White House response: We fully expect Speaker McCarthywho has stated his support for funding to support Ukraine in its fight against Russias illegal and unjustified war of aggressionwill bring a separate bill to the floor shortly.

(12,277 posts)McCarthy's word now?
Republicans in both the House and Senate are on the record for being against Ukraine funding.
...they'll have this fight another day, without putting the nation's funding at risk - like republicans did.

(13,431 posts)They needed McCarthy to learn a lesson, and that is he is never going to get anywhere with the extreme Maga members and that there is a lot of other republicans that want to get the job done.

(94,256 posts)...this isn't some Democratic fault, or the WH's, although you're angling hard to make it so.
It's not a D or R thing. Congress has exposed a crack in the armor.
Republicans has shown that Ukraine funding has its limits.
To think that Russia and Republicans are not going to exploit that is lying to yourself.
My concern is that they've exposed that, make the deal sweet enough, some are willing to sell Ukrainians out if it's the right deal.
bigtree
(94,256 posts)...I'm putting faith and interest in what funding proponents here in the U.S. will do, are saying they will do.
I'm not putting any expectations on what Putin will do, and not really seeing that as an obstacle to anything Ukraine-related in the U.S..
And I don't think you have any of that you posited correct. Just sayin'.

(987 posts)Let me tell you a few things about social security. The agency is underfunded. The job is extremely complicated and new hires quit because they can't learn the systems with the current training programs. Employees are quitting in droves and the current workload is left to those who remain. Who in the hell do the republicans think is going to manage the agency? This is a warning to all. Shit on social security and the repubs will never get re elected. Social Security is one of our most important social safety nets in the history of our democracy. I am angry. There is an easy to fix to shoring up the trust fund, but oh no. Nobody listens.
