(10,252 posts)those are OK. Ya know, stuff like Don Giovanni, Marriage of Figaro, Tosca, Rigaletto, etc. -- those are OK.
I guess it never occurred to them that no one is forcing them to listen to any particular opera broadcast, but who gives them the right to decide what other people in NC can and can't listen too?
Compliments of the "Freedom" party.
I am so tired of these ignorant asshole bigots. They wouldn't recognize art if it sat in their laps.

(4,002 posts)It's like the book bans in schools. They're not giving parents choice but inflicting their fascist hate on everyone. No one is forcing people to listen to opera.

Ocelot II
(130,536 posts)and I will be seeing Dead Man Walking via the Met's HD broadcast in a few weeks. Dead Man Walking begins with a rape, but so does Mozart's Don Giovanni - and I recently saw a production of that opera that depicted the assault of Donna Anna pretty graphically. The Hours is based on Virginia Woolf's book Mrs. Dalloway, but OMG there's a gay character! And Fire Shut Up In My Bones is all about Black people and has an all-Black cast, and we can't have that, can we? All of these productions were first-rate performances of first-rate works, but this troglodyte radio station is afraid children will be exposed to these terrible things (how many children listen to opera broadcasts on the radio?). The horror, the horror....

(10,252 posts)How many thousands of renditions of Summertime have been recorded? Well ya can't listen or play that one any more. And while we're banning black music, I guess blues, jazz, motown, black gospel, and rocknroll gotta go too.
and gay musicians -- Queen & Freddie Mercury, Ricky Martin, Elton John, Melissa Etheridge, Dusty Springfield, ---
There were gay classical composers that get banned too, like Handel (sigh, no more Messiah & Halleluia Chorus), Benjamin Brittain, Franz Schubert, Saint-Saëns, Lully, Tchaikovsky (sigh no more Swan Lake), Copeland (sigh, no more Appalachian Spring), AND NO MORE COLE PORTER!!!
All complements of the "Freedom" party.
Do you see how stupid this all is?
Ocelot II
(130,536 posts)Handel and the other classical composers were mostly safe in their closets, so we can still hear their music without worrying about what it would do to the children; It's when they're out that the "Freedom" party idiots start getting the vapors. And Black musicians can do their music as long as they're not too Black about it. It's kind of like how Black athletes can do sports and everybody loves them as long as they don't do something Black, like speak out for civil rights.
It's all transcendentally ridiculous.

(10,252 posts)it's just all so stupid. I guess I'm getting a mite vexed about all this stupid bigotry. I don't like being told what I can read, watch, and listen to. Who are they to tell us what is or isn't art, culture, meaningful? I'm not forcing them to like what I like. They all need to go eat a bug and get over it!

(1,296 posts)Or is it OK since it occurred between a white brother and sister, and the opera itself was written by a white dude?
(For the record, I'm not dissing Wagner here; I think that he wrote the finest operas ever.)

(130,536 posts)Siegmund gets horizontal with Sieglinde, and Siegfried is their child. Brunnhilde, Siegfried's lover, is also Wotan's daughter and therefore Siegfried's aunt. You'd think that whole crowd would be horribly inbred but I guess it doesn't matter for gods, at least white ones.

(37,848 posts)Almost every opera features a fat person cross dressing near the end.
Ocelot II
(130,536 posts)and a fair amount of cross-dressing (women singing the roles of male characters and vice-versa), but it's OK with a certain radio station because the composers are white and mostly not gay.

(37,848 posts)How will they know? Is there like an online registry of operas certified as written by white males who werent gay? Im guessing that play list is very short and might not even include Wagner.
