(40,969 posts)That was wonderful.
The photo of the five presidents standing together, GHW Bush, Obama, GW Bush, Clinton, & then Carter reminds me of an old Danzinger cartoon at the time where the five are sharing a meal & the four are at the table eating & Carter is by a wall outlet with a screwdriver fixing something.
I voted for Carter in my first presidential election & I proudly voted for him again in 80.

(2,010 posts)I voted for Carter in my first presidential election, but sadly that was 1980. I was devastated by that loss. When he and his wife became involved in Habitat for Humanity as private citizens, I was very impressed and proud.

He is a remarkable man. Seeing these photos, spanning 90+ years is heartwarming.
I wish him a wonderful 99th birthday, and a sincere thank you for his many years of (military, public and private) service to the people of this country, and abroad.

(22,212 posts)He went to Three Mile Island and understood the technical aspects. That's not common in American politics. He was one of the hand picked by Rickover to join the nuclear navy and the silent service.

(26,168 posts)It was good to know we had a president who really understood the situation at Three Mile Island - it gave me confidence in his ability to see things handled properly. I don't know of any other president who could have done the same.
All of the photos are a wonderful trip through memory lane. I adore Jimmy. He's truly a good man.

(1,455 posts)I meet him at a book signing in the 90s. He was much taller than I was expecting. The bookstore was packed and overflowing. They ran out of books. A great man.

(55,135 posts)He accomplished more than all the rest, and that's taking nothing from the other former Presidents in those pics. Of course I didn't like the Bushes and their secrecy, and Clinton's and Obama's use of the Bully Pulpit were hindered by Republican Congresses, but all of them attended these great events and got along, and smiled, and respected one another. Of course what do you expect in the most exclusive of brotherhhoods - former US Presidents - but still, they made it work.
I'm in tears, the Carter years were good ones, even with inflation and energy and hostages, American stood together, and worked on their problems, and weren't trying to bury the other party like rabid dogs. Then came Reagan, and we're still dealing with that divisiveness. Could you see Trump at any of those events?

(17,615 posts)I do wonder about that picture of them with the Bidens. It does look odd to me, almost like it's photoshopped.

(17,615 posts)I just think the photographer did something crazy with his camera that makes them look out of proportion to the Bidens. I don't even think it was deliberate. I'm not a photographer, but my daughter is and the stuff one can do with a photo these days is incredible. I also wonder why the photographer wouldn't say why the picture looks that way.

(10,803 posts)My brother in law tells a great story about when he met Jimmy Carter.
They were both working on the same house for Habitat For Humanity.
He didn't meet Pres. Carter while working on the house, they were each working on a separate part of the house.
But Habitat For Humanity supplies showers for the volunteers, so my BIL starts taking his shower, when who happens to walk in, complete naked? Yup, Pres. Carter. 😁

(12,281 posts)I ever met face to face. It was 1978 and I was 8 years old. We went to an event he was appearing at and I was pressed up against this gate a couple of kids around me. It was toward the end of this particular area meet and greet section as I remember being pressed up against the edge of a opening that the president was going to walk through. A couple adults were really pushing in on us and a couple of us expressed pain as we were being pushed and president Carter said "easy, easy everyone claim down" and a SS person pushed adults back a little from us and Carter kneeled down and talked to us for a couple seconds and patted us on our heads and I will never forget that smiling face literally inches from my face (really only have a clear memory of that, his smile, the rest is from accounts from my parents and pictures we had)

(82 posts)When the Camp David Accords were signed I was an avid supporter of President Cater (still am). I read everything I could in our papers (we had a morning paper and an evening paper) and I wrote a letter to each leader. I received a reply from President Carter and a reply from an Aide to President Sadat. I met First Lady Rosalyn Carter in late January, 1980. She was visiting Rochester NY - I was babysitting a beautiful little one-year old, Michael. We trekked off to the flower shop to purchase a white rose, then took a bus to the downtown mall. We were both bundled up due to the very cold weather. While we were waiting for her, one of her security staff approached and asked if we would like to meet her! Michael and I were second in line, after a young girl holding a small bouquet of mixed flowers. When it was our turn she spoke so softly to Micheal and he handed her the rose. She thanked us and I told her I was moving to the South the following month. She told me I would like it very much and wished me a safe trip. Later that evening Michael and I made the local news! Michaels father was in the hospital and was so proud to tell the nurses and doctors that his son met the First Lady.

(90,017 posts)Sure took me back. Hes such an honorable man. Im glad hes getting all these salutes now, while hes still around to enjoy them. I feel like many of us took him for granted when he was President. I admit I didnt appreciate him then, as much as I do now. He and Rosalyn are both such genuinely good and decent people. Role models for us all.
