Kevin McCarthy didn't learn from Paul Ryan, who didn't learn from John Boehner, who didn't learn from Dennis Hastert or Newt Gingrich. and Gingrich didn't - and wouldn't - learn from ANYBODY.

If memory serves, not one of them felt they needed to learn anything from anyone or anywhere.

Seems to have been if he swung hard right at the end and blamed democrats like a good MAGA he could head off Gaetz... honestly in today's republican party probably a better chance of seeking that hard line purity than seeking to retain the office by cooperating with Democrats and trying to govern. The problem is that Gaetz and those who took him down don't really make any ideological sense, so playing to the right when they were playing little personal games did him no good.

The day of the insurrection he blamed Trump. A few days later he was at Mar A Lago kissing his ass. McCarthy could have done the right thing and supported the impeachment, and enough Repugs would probably have come with him. (Yes, I know the vote was in the Senate, but he could have stood up and told the truth). It would be a different world today if Republican leadership had done the right thing in 2021. He was the top Republican in the House.
