NJ: Democrats returning VBMS three times as fast as GOP
With five weeks left before Election Day, New Jerseyans have returned 46,399 vote-by-mail ballots – five percent of the 910,252 that have been sent out by county election officials, according to an analysis by Ryan Dubicki, an election researcher for the Associated Press.
Democrats and Republicans have each returned 6% of their ballots statement, with unaffiliated voters at 2%. But 65% of all returned ballots so far have come from Democrats and 23% from Republicans.
The highest return rate is in the 3rd legislative district, where 4,301 ballots have been sent back – 18% of all mailed; 2,942 have come from Democrats and 894 from Republicans. The district features one of the hottest Senate races in the state, with State Sen. Edward Durr (R-Logan) facing Democrat John Burzichelli, a former ten-term assemblyman.
In District 3, more than 10,000 ballots were mailed to Democrats than Republicans. In the 4th district, where Assemblyman Paul Moriarty (D-Washington Township) faces Republican Christopher Del Borrello for an open Senate seat, roughly 15,000 more Democrats have received mail-in ballots than Republicans.
It does appear that the Monmouth County Board of Elections is slow to report the receipt of VBM ballots: just 13 out of 20,834 are recorded as returned.
