Understanding Ohio's updated mail-in voting, absentee ballot procedures for 2023 election

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — As Ohio gears up for the highly-anticipated November election, one critical aspect on everyone's minds is the process of mail-in voting and absentee ballots. But there are important changes to Ohio's voting laws for the 2023 election that you need to know about.

If you're registered to vote, you can vote by mail by requesting an absentee ballot. In Ohio, mail-in voting and absentee ballots are available to all voters, regardless of the reason. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is seven days before an election.


- Fill out and mail an absentee ballot application to your county board of elections;
- Request an absentee ballot online or in person at your county board of elections office;
- If you are a member of the U.S. armed forces or a civilian overseas voter, you can request an absentee ballot online or by mail from the Federal Voting Assistance Program;
- You must provide your Ohio driver's license number or the last four digits of your Social Security number on your absentee ballot application. If you do not have either number, you must include a front and back photocopy of a different form of a current photo identification.

2. If you don't have an acceptable photo ID

(Now that the in person voting rules require one), you can still vote absentee without one as long as you know the last 4 digits of your social security #.

I do voter protection, but haven't since the new voter ID laws took effect. It's not ideal, but at least there is a way to vote without a photo ID, for those who don't have/can't get one.
