NYC: Adams defends his campaign's compliance on donations, despite inconsistencies

Mayor Adams on Tuesday touted “the level of scrutiny” he and his campaign have put to vetting political contributions — despite a recent indictment alleging straw donors gave to his campaign and several inconsistencies connected to other donations unearthed by news outlets.

Adams was defending his 2021 campaign’s compliance record two days after the Daily News reported three people listed as donors in public records said they either didn’t remember making sizeable donations — or didn’t make one at all.

“Every person that contributes to the campaign — the signatures are compared. Then we pay an additional compliance attorney that, before anything is deposited in the bank, there’s another level of scrutiny to look at the check,” he explained during a City Hall press conference. “We have sent back thousands of dollars of those items that our compliance attorney states it does not fit the muster.”

Contributions that are not made with a credit card — including checks, cash and money orders — typically require signatures to go along with them. But credit card payments do not, which means not all contributions can be verified with a signature.
