Kaiser

(I'm not on X so this is from my email)

"At a time when health care professionals are burnt out after the pandemic and there are severe staffing shortages in the profession, now is the time to provide better pay and working conditions in order to attract more health care professionals into the field and retain those who are already there.

That would result in better health care outcomes for everyone.

A win-win.

But that would impact Kaiser’s bottom line, and therein lies the rub. After all, the business establishment in this country is really not particularly concerned about the well-being of their workers or the quality of health care outcomes.

They are, however, deeply concerned about profit margins, stockholder dividends and CEO compensation.

And the question we should be asking is: how is it that Kaiser – which just reported $2.1 billion in net income during the second quarter of 2023 alone – cannot afford to pay their employees better wages?

How is it that Kaiser – which pays its CEO more than $15 million and gave its former CEO a retirement package of $35 million – can't afford better staffing ratios to improve worker well-being and patient care? "

2. Fuck Kaiser. I'm switching plans. Mid November is the earliest

I can get a Covid vaccine and that’s 50 miles away even though I live in San Diego. Or I can pay $190.00 at cvs or rite aide and maybe or maybe not get reimbursed. What are they doing with all that sweet Medicare and senior advantage money? Fuck Kaiser. I filled a complaint with them. Now I’m going to complain to Medicare.

I’d love to have it in my area. Was on it years ago, and really liked it.

Been healthy and happy with Kaiser. That’s why I stayed with them all way through to Medicare. Now I just want a frggin Covid vaccine. Weeks ago I started my inquiry. Anyway I’m becoming increasingly frustrated with them. I have time to make the switch so I’ll do my research and post back.

And employee for almost ten years. I also used to be an EMT and have seen many healthcare systems, which is one reason I tried for years to get on with Kaiser. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Still, it's better than most I have experienced. We are working on making it better in spite of management. Good luck to you.

Kaiser. The people are wonderful: my doctor, the woman who does my mammogram, my son’s surgeon- all wonderful. The wait times/scheduling has been getting frustrating. I’ll do my research and follow the strike issues. Ask friends and family and spend some real time comparing plans.

7. 'The Cash Monster Was Insatiable': How Insurers Exploited Medicare for Billions
Fri Oct 6, 2023, 07:29 PM
Oct 2023
By next year, half of Medicare beneficiaries will have a private Medicare Advantage plan. Most large insurers in the program have been accused in court of fraud.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/08/upshot/medicare-advantage-fraud-allegations.html

https://archive.ph/ME5pN

The health system Kaiser Permanente called doctors in during lunch and after work and urged them to add additional illnesses to the medical records of patients they hadn’t seen in weeks. Doctors who found enough new diagnoses could earn bottles of Champagne, or a bonus in their paycheck.

Anthem, a large insurer now called Elevance Health, paid more to doctors who said their patients were sicker. And executives at UnitedHealth Group, the country’s largest insurer, told their workers to mine old medical records for more illnesses — and when they couldn’t find enough, sent them back to try again.

Each of the strategies — which were described by the Justice Department in lawsuits against the companies — led to diagnoses of serious diseases that might have never existed. But the diagnoses had a lucrative side effect: They let the insurers collect more money from the federal government’s Medicare Advantage program.

Medicare Advantage, a private-sector alternative to traditional Medicare, was designed by Congress two decades ago to encourage health insurers to find innovative ways to provide better care at lower cost. If trends hold, by next year, more than half of Medicare recipients will be in a private plan.

8. Looking at executive pay doesn't tell the whole story.
Fri Oct 6, 2023, 07:52 PM

Look at the list.

35 employees making $1M+ annually.

Look at the wages of Doctors. Lots of Cardiologists, Oncologists, etc... makes 350-450k a year nowadays... Hotshot surgeons and super duper specialists, 600k+

Hell, lots of RN's make 120k a year...

Take those top 35 employees and give them a pay cut to the average salary of an MD... and distribute their "excess pay" to 300,000 other workers and it might cover a Starbucks Venti Latte per day for a year.

Paper-shuffling and meeting-generation counts more than the troops.
NObody actually "earns" $111K per day.

10. The problem isn't attracting new people
Fri Oct 6, 2023, 08:43 PM

Kaiser is a highly sought after place of employment who take good care of their employees (source: half my in-laws work there). If I play my cards right, I plan on working there after graduation.

The current problem, particularly with nursing shortages, is that there aren't enough schools/slots available to train new nurses. I'm going through this now, where 300 people are applying for 25 spots. Even though I have a 4.0 and blew my TEAS test out of the water, it's still highly, highly competitive.

I support the strike and workers earning higher pay. But there is a lot more at work with these healthcare shortages. We need more schools and more instructors, because right now a lot of medical schools and certifications are getting bottle-necked because of it.
