https://www.timesofisrael.com/for-years-netanyahu-propped-up-hamas-now-its-blown-up-in-our-faces/For years, the various governments led by Benjamin Netanyahu took an approach that divided power between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank bringing Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to his knees while making moves that propped up the Hamas terror group.
The idea was to prevent Abbas or anyone else in the Palestinian Authoritys West Bank government from advancing toward the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Thus, amid this bid to impair Abbas, Hamas was upgraded from a mere terror group to an organization with which Israel held indirect negotiations via Egypt, and one that was allowed to receive infusions of cash from abroad.

(1,071 posts)Used Hamas to create chaos in his own country?
Makes sense. But now Hamas has gone too far, Hamas must be crushed.

There are explanations.
Explanations ignored or denied lead to blind-siderism..

(93,985 posts)neighbors who wanted to destroy Israel in both those wars, told the Palestinians not to have any peace agreement with Israel because they would destroy Israel.
There were multiple opportunities for a Palestinian state before Netanyahu with leaders such as Sadat, Rabin, Carter, and Clinton.
The tragedy is all those opportunities were ambushed by extremists.
When Clinton left office, he left a real possibility for a framework between Israel and the Palestinians, but bush came into power and refused to engage where Clinton left off. Not only did he ignore that, but the bush administration ignored the Hart/Rudman report, which warned about AQ. Cheney's arrogance threw that report away, saying they would do their own report.
