Palestine would be made a protectorate of the U.S., the one country in the world that could move troops and administrators in and guarantee safety to both sides. This would be something on the order of how we dealt with Germany and Japan after WW2, when we put our minds to it we are great at nation building.
I know it would be difficult and dangerous for the people we send there but building up Palestine would be much cheaper than the aid we are giving to both side in this conflict and more importantly it will save live and add some stability to the middle east

(5,553 posts)As a protectorate the U.S. would be their government and the military with the goal of building their infrastructure and stopping the border attacks in both directions.

(1,285 posts)Is the only solution. It's ridiculous that has not yet happened.
If Yitzhak Rabin has not been killed, they may have gotten there.
A great man of peace.
It is indeed a shame.

(19,899 posts)Palestinians rejected it, and responded instead with a wave of violence that continues to shape the situation today.

(4,002 posts)I was only vaguely familiar with the Clinton proposal so I read a Wikipedia article on it.

The concerns listed that led to the rejection were varied.

(96,882 posts)First, a reminder that Palestine was a protectorate of Great Britain. How did that work out?
Second, Afghanistan was effectively a protectorate of the US for more than 20 years. How did THAT work out? Seriously, you want to post troops in Gaza and the West Bank permanently and be open targets for the next terrorist group that comes along?
Third, lets discuss what you DIDNT say: Palestine is being protected by the US FROM ISRAEL Setting aside the fact that no US leader (Republocan or Democratic) will endorse that concept, imagine the geo-political consequences of entering into a border conflict with the only Democracy in the Middle East?

(9,647 posts)You have incurred the wrath of the Zionists on this board that support Israel no matter what. If Palestine were to become a US Protectorate, it becomes a bit harder for right-wing religious fundamentalist Israeli settlers to seize and annex more of the West Bank. We would also have to fund and rebuild the West Bank, and we find it extremely difficult to fund infrastructure in our own country. Plus l could see the Republicans and even some Democrats continuing to screw over the Palestinians if it were to become a U.S. Protectorate.
I would rather see an international mandate with a multinational military force that would secure the border of Israel with the West Bank. Furthermore, I would like to see the City of Jerusalem fall under the mandate, with the understanding that there will not be any further changes to the holy sites.

Did we learn nothing from 20 years in Afghanistan? You cant superimpose your cultural values on a people that dont share them already.
No one over there really wants the two state solution, they want to annihilate one another, its the only outcome they will accept. Theyve been working hard at it for over 2000 years.
Especially when neither side wants us on the ground over there, not worth one American soldiers life. If they cant agree to live peaceably, how could we force them?
