(47,940 posts)Let the few decent Republicans vote for Hakeem and get this done. Someone estimated there are 12 sane Republicans left.

Our is credibility is waning because of our own domestic terrorists.

(49,495 posts)Republicans should resign in shame. They are incompetent.

(19,679 posts)it should be noted that it would only take 5 House Repukes to prevent a shutdown (by selecting a Dem Speaker and passing a CR, then -- if they insist, and they would -- immediately re-vacating the Speaker's chair with all R votes), and it wouldn't rely on those five Rs trusting Ds in any way. Those aisle-crossers would remain in control, because of their ability to yank the Speakership at any time.
Remember that if there is a shutdown because there still isn't a Speaker. It would only be happening because 98% of House Rs would rather have a government shutdown than behave like a responsible adult.
And because of the majority-minority asymmetry in ability to kick the Speaker out, it does not follow that Dems should cross the aisle to select a R speaker, because once in place they would need R votes to hold that Speaker to account for any broken promises or agreement. That a non-starter, there is no such reservoir of trust.

(60,375 posts)In other words, a nobody out of nowhere, who will embarrass nobody, offend nobody, impress nobody, and BE nobody. The lightning rods draw just that, and at some point, the rest of them will get tired of being fried in the court of public opinion. Like the slogan goes, Democracy dies in darkness, and the Republicans are having too much light on them for the moment for democracy to die (their goal).
House Republicans are not the passengers on Flight 93. They will not crash their plane to save anyone else, certainly not the country or the government. Any Republican House member who votes for Hakeem for Speaker might as well switch parties now, and have a seat on the board of Dow Chemical or AT&T waiting on January 3, 2025.

Even the "nobodies" are adept at being offensive, embarrassing and not at all impressive. Why do you think they belong to the party they do?

(60,375 posts)Sort of like how useless it is to be a Republican on Cape Cod--or a Democrat in northern Idaho.
I don't know if there IS a House Republican who meets those criteria, but it's the only thing that will keep the speaker's gavel in their hands AND give a ghost of a chance to get anything done.

Oh well. Guess they'll keep churning out crazies.

(60,375 posts)Republicans will put up a death strip and armed towers at the aisle to make sure none of their members cross the border without written permission from the party bosses, just like their socialist role models in East Germany.
