Real Time with Bill Maher continues its 21st season Friday, October 13 (10:00-11:00 p.m. live ET/tape-delayed PT), with a replay at 11:00 p.m., exclusively on HBO.
This week features a one-on-one interview with Tristan Harris, tech ethicist, co-founder and executive director of the non-profit Center for Humane Technology, and a co-host of the podcast Your Undivided Attention.
This week's in-studio panel discussion will include James Kirchick, columnist for Tablet Magazine, writer-at-large for Air Mail, and author of Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington; and Matt Duss, executive vice-president at the Center for International Policy, former foreign policy advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace.

(10,969 posts)I honestly can't say I'm familiar with Matt Duss.
Should be interesting given the week's events.

(2,958 posts)All in all, an excellent show! And I'm not surprised at all that Mr. Maher took it to Mr. Duss... good for him.
"It bothers me the moral equivalency that goes on in the American media," Maher said. "I don't think Israelis would ever purposely kill babies. I think they have killed babies. That's collateral damage, which is another horrible thing, but that's part of war. I think there's a very different than difference between rejoicing when you kill civilians and the Israelis regret when they kill civilians." -Bill Maher
Of course, his detractors will of course say this only proves he's an Islamophobe.

(10,969 posts)I could've watched Tristan Harris talk all hour. So informed, quick, and perceptive.
James Kirchick just spitting absolute fire. Loved it.
Matt Duss felt like he just wanted to run interference for the shittiness we've witnessed in the past week from certain quarters, and at one point I thought Kirchick was going to conk him one with his coffee mug. You could see he was in no mood for Duss' shit. What a weasel. He sought to confound rather than to clarify.
I thought Kirchick was this close to calling him a fucking idiot.
It was glorious.
Liked the New Rules. I agree with the problem with technological isolation, particularly with young people. More and more, I try to leave my phone on my desk when I go to do something else. (Also, AI Jodie Foster, lol).

(255,546 posts)I liked the show, too, good guests and a very good discussion. Not so much comedy this week, but there's not all that much to laugh about now - a war and innocent people dying in a vulnerable part of the world and our government in chaos. But the panelists were very informed and presented facts, despite their disagreement.

(56,108 posts)Harris was really good the last time. I really enjoyed him. I am not a big podcast person, but I may have to check his out. Plus, well, he is really easy on the eyes.
I agree with your comments about the other two (have you read Kirchick's book? I haven't got it yet.) and Huss, tip-toed right up to the line of apologist.
With the exception of DU and few other sites, I don't do social media, and I don't carry my phone with me at all times, except when out of the house.
It was a good show.
DET
(2,499 posts)Id never heard of James Kirchick, but he said something that I thought was quite insightful during the discussion of the current conflict (to the best of my recollection): If the Arabs laid down their weapons, there would be peace. If the Jews laid down their weapons, there would be no more Jews.

(255,546 posts)They were all very informed, good discussion.

Somebody will post the exact quote.

(52,134 posts)longer than any other time, I think.
Duss tried to blame the Israeli society for the current right wing government. This will be like blaming the American society for Trump.

(255,546 posts)And despite the disagreements between the panelists, I thought it was a good discussion.

(255,546 posts)Not as much humor as usual, but given this week's news it was to be expected. There was so much going on I actually watched it twice.
