It seems to me he can block stuff, but with the Senate and presidency in Dem hands I dont see how he can do stuff.

(9,556 posts)Had he been speaker on Jan. 6, 2021, we would be living in the Trump autocracy right now. That alone should be a sobering thought. But we are an unserious country.

(55,523 posts)He's just going to rant and try to pull the stuff he does in committee as Speaker instead. He can wreak havoc. But he will come across as McCarthy with more anger, louder, and less logical.

(26,410 posts)Else currently in the running. They all seem unlikely to hold their party together. Jim is all bark, no bite. He will be louder than Kevin which makes him easier to deal with for democrats. He's unlikely to make backdoor agreements, meaning he's likely to quickly get bogged down in any basic governmental function. There's a lot of doubt he can even ass kiss enough to get the job. He's unlikable, pig headed, loud, and not bright. He has little chance to do much more than scream a lot and put on big displays.
I figure government shutdown will be impossible to avoid with him.

(394 posts)Their party wants the government to shutdown. Even if we saved McCarthy the lesson he would take away from his experience would be to double down in November and shut things down. He wouldn't learn the actual lesson that trying to placate the crazies will always get you burned.
Sadly, I think the government will shutdown no matter who the speaker is and that's not great but it might be necessary. Until people realize that there are no both sides in politics they will continue to enable Republicans.
