Sorry, I haven't looked into all the details on this and have been extremely busy. If he gets it and the GOP Congress becomes more of a clown show does that win us back the House next fall without too much damage to the Country or is he going to do too much real damage even if we do win the Congress back?

(8,907 posts)It doesn't matter who the GOPs shove up there.
It's all the same stink. All the same bigotry. All the same fascism.

(15,909 posts)Jordan would gladly lead the House in refusing to certify anyone but Trump as the winner of the next election.

(1,664 posts)Even if a Jim Jordan speakership means it makes Democrats look better and more likely to win an election, I don't want it, because people get hurt in the meantime. And I want to have some pride in my institutions, so I will take a moderate Republican who is interested at least somewhat in governing.

(15,909 posts)Too many people here are making crass political calculations without considering the collateral damage.
Further, one of the calculations they're failing to make is that no matter how good Jordan makes Democrats look for the next election, when it comes to the presidential election, Jordan would happily try to use the House to deny Biden a second term, which he'd still be in the position to do before an incoming Democratic majority had the chance to replace him.

(7,115 posts)it will be worse for the Dems, and the country in general. Longer term it should benefit because Gym is a nut bag.
But I do worry that he will try to do J6 part 2 if he has any power at all post election day 2024, but before Jan 1 2025.

The 12th Amendment mandates Congress assemble in joint session to count the electoral votes and declare the winners of the election. The Electoral Count Act, a federal law enacted in 1887, further established specific procedures for the counting of the electoral votes by the joint Congress. The session is ordinarily required to take place on January 6 in the calendar year immediately following the meetings of the presidential electors. Since the 20th Amendment, the newly elected joint Congress declares the winner of the election; all elections before 1936 were determined by the outgoing Congress.
A state's certificate of vote can be rejected only if both Houses of Congress, debating separately, vote to accept an objection by a majority in each House. If the objection is approved by both Houses, the state's votes are not included in the count. Individual votes can also be objected to, and are also not counted. If there are no objections or all objections are overruled, the presiding officer simply includes a state's votes, as declared in the certificate of vote, in the official tally. After the certificates from all states are read and the respective votes are counted, the presiding officer simply announces the final state of the vote. This announcement concludes the joint session and formalizes the recognition of the president-elect and of the vice president-elect. The senators then depart from the House chamber. The final tally is printed in the Senate and House journals.

(12,114 posts)A nutjob like him with that amount of power could cause a lot of damage.
Plus, he'd be third in line for the presidency.
No way.

(15,593 posts)There are two problems his potential "speakership" would bring; he will grind the government to a halt as he continues to try to impeach Biden through Hunter's actions and - if we don't regain the majority of the House back, he will refuse to certify the election. I don't want that risk.
He will not bring any more favors than Kevin McCarthy did, since the Media is in the bag for the GOP anyway; running against Republicans who voted for him and the destruction he is going to cause is not actually going to peel many more voters against them, even in purple/never Trump districts.
GOP voters aren't honest voters; and if they're still GOP, they won't vote for a Democrat in the house unless there is absolutely no option.
Not to mention there are still enough idiots out there who sincerely believe that the President should have either a House or Senate in the opposition party, otherwise he's just going to be too powerful.
